Description So, after a long, looong hiatus, here's my third Historically Accurate Disney Princess. This is Princess Aurora from Sleeping Beauty in a 1470s Burgundian style gown of sapphire-blue velvet and a brocade underskirt. It took a while to figure what era best suited this character aesthetically and conceptually, but I think this is the best. Even though Phillip in the movie states that it was the 14th century, there is nothing-- and I mean nothing-- 14th century about the costumes worn by any the characters. The movie's a gigantic mishmash of eras (which works fine for the movie) but it's kind of tricky for this sort of exercise.

Anyway, Aurora's off-the-shoulder collar, tight girded gown and long, very tight sleeves can only be found, out of the entire medieval era, in the late 15th century-- more specifically, in the last gasp of Burgundian fashion in the 1470s-80s-- so I went with that. I used these illuminations here and here for reference. (The brocade pattern came from this picture here .)

As for her hair, maidens back then frequently wore their hair loose-- it was also the accepted tradition at betrothals and weddings (not to mention coronations if you were a royal). You can see some of this in this depiction of a betrothal from Les Tres Riches Heures from the early 15th century. As for Aurora's crown, it's somewhere between the crown worn by Anne of Bohemia and the smaller crowns favored by Isabella of Castile.

My original preparatory sketch from April 2011 can be seen here. [link] As you can see, I pretty much stuck with my original concept, except I made her crown more ornate.

So there you go! More Disney princesses (or heroines, really) to follow.

Sleeping Beauty is a 1950s medievally mish-mash of costumes that aren't rooted in any particular era, though there's much more references to late 15th/early 16th century costume than anything else (i.e. Maleficent's houppelande, Aurora's neckline, the Tudory elements on Philip and his father's costumes). This wiki article is as good as any to start for "what did people wear in the 14th century"? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1300%E2%… (i.e.Β not what they wore in the movie)

BTW, this Frock Flicks article is an excellent overview on the costume influences in the movie.Β www.frockflicks.com/disney-pri…

SHE'S IN THE RIGHT COLOR! This is beautiful, but thank you so, so much for also putting Aurora in the color she actually wears most of the movie (and the one that looks good on her, and actually goes with the theme of a "sleeping" beauty). Gorgeous work. IN the future I'd suggest working on anatomy a bit (the writs seem off), but overall, gorgeous work.Β

SOOOOO glad you used her blue dress instead of the pink one. Ugh. I HATE her pink dress! And I don't care what anyone says, Ariel's pink dress looks good on her! Red hair does NOT clash with pink clothing, haha.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

suburbanbeatnik In reply to StainedGlassJesus [2014-06-01 23:22:52 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, Aurora is all about the blue. I hate how they've done her up in the Disney Princess line. Yuck...

Re: redheads and pink, it really depends on the shade of hair and the shade of pink.

and the skin tone shade, too. Same reason why whether I prefer blue or green eyes on someone with black hair depends on their skin tone. Black hair with pale skin, blue eyes look better. Black hair with an olive skin tone, like Mediterranean or Middle Eastern, then green looks better.

This has to be my favorite out of all the art you've done for this series, though Belle is a very close second. I think it's that, to me, this most resembles Aurora's original gown (and you made it blue!!!), but while keeping it original and decadent. She looks mature, stunning, and I'm in love with the touches of white. They really accent the blue. Also, her crown. Love. Loooove.

I love basically every drawing you've ever put out, and you are amazing.
I REALLY love this one though. Aurora was always my favorite, as evidenced by my username, lol.

I was wondering, if it would be okay with if I cosplay this?
I was going to do this one: [link] which is actually very similar in style to yours. She's just got a headdress instead of a crown in that one, and fancier sleeves.
I don't know, I feel like everyone has been doing that set of 'historical' Disney princesses though(for a lot of them, that artist says they just picked the era they felt like..see their Rapunzel drawing description if you want an example of what I mean). And with that one there would be all kinds of insane embroidery on the underskirt.
So, I think yours is slightly more historically accurate, and I'd like to cosplay yours, probably in a group with friends doing all the others.
So let me know if that's okay, and here's hoping for more drawings soon!!! That way everyone will be able to pick a character to be.

suburbanbeatnik In reply to AuroraMaryte [2012-10-21 02:48:06 +0000 UTC]

That would be awesome! I am so flattered! Aurora's gown in my painting is a simple late 15th cent. Burgundian gown, and you can find a pattern for that fairly easily. Here's a good place to start: [link]

I'm working on Mulan next-- she'll be done this weekend. Then it'll be Esmeralda, Megara and Rapunzel. (After that it'll probably be Eilonwy and Jane.) Let me know how the cosplay thing works out, and be sure to send me pics!
