Description
Sorry its so freakin' big. Someone on Zelda Universe needed help for a clipping mask, so I made a big tutorial on it. Hopefully its unmistakably easy to make one for signatures. Hope this is a help to someone.

Please don't rip!

Wow, this was totally useful! I'd heard about mask layers but I never knew what they were for exactly. This helped a lot! Thanks for making it!

interesting...I've only ever heard of "quick masking" and "masking" before this...I'll have to look into the effects it can do and see if it could be useful to me!

BTW, just to get this strait...the clipping mask copies whatever was below it and allows you to move it and have weird effects on it on a new layer? is that right, or did I completely get my signals crossed there?

sugarpoultry In reply to BuzzTheWolf [2009-04-28 04:48:03 +0000 UTC]

Yah sorta, it moves an image to under an image. So if you have a splatter brush, and you put an image on top of it in a new layer, when you do a clipping mask, it moves that image under the splatter brush so its like an opening and you can move it around.

I hope that made sense.. haha

Ah! I think I see what you're saying...it sorta creates a little window in the area that you had placed the splatter brush, and lets you move whatever was in it, around on top as though you took a cookie cutter to it.

hmmm...does that sound right?

shaweet!! so then, it's like the marquee tool, only better!!...right?

(sorry, just trying to think of a simplified version that is somewhat directly related to a tool in PS...)

I think the best person to ask about clipping masks and GIMP would be my buddy . He uses GIMP for all his sigs and he's amazing. Tell him I sent ya.

This is the first time I've ever heard of a clipping mask. Looks cool; I may just have to play around with this someday!

This is an awesome tut! I've always hidden the splatter layer before applying the image though... are there any advantages to leaving the brush layer visible?

sugarpoultry In reply to SmashMobius [2009-03-23 04:00:38 +0000 UTC]

It doesn't do anything. You get the same effect either way. I like it because I can tell it worked better. It kind of crisps up the border of the splatter or something. But it doesn't matter either way. I've heard both ways too.

SmashMobius In reply to sugarpoultry [2009-03-23 04:34:02 +0000 UTC]

I've never actually tried leaving the splatter in... I'll have to try it out for myself to see how it feels lol.

I don't really use splatter brushes much either... all the brushes I find are absolutely HUGE (like 2500 px ) Do you know where I can get some sig friendly sized splatters?

sugarpoultry In reply to SmashMobius [2009-03-23 05:15:29 +0000 UTC]

Oh I use TONS of stuff, not just splatter.

And um... I found all my brushes here on deviantArt. ^_^
