Description Here's an example of the stages I go through when painting something. Unfortunately the camera I took these pics with always manages to squish the pic, or make it darker so it's a bit over the place, but you can get the general idea

This was done with acrylic on paper with some pencil work for good measure.

The finished painting can be seen at:

Interesting tutorial and really cool work. Never tried using pencil for the details after painting.... gonna give it a whirl on my next piece, see if I have any success.

Thanks for the tip.

The fear of not getting it right, I know it too I would've panic at the stage of the second picture, where the mouth looks very awkward. But in the end, it looks perfect!

how did you learn to paint??

I started painting as a child and just didn't stop (actually that's not true. In my teens I was distracted by teen angsty shenanigans, in my twenties I was busy in Uni drinking twice my weight in alcohol. I started painting again mid twenties and now I paint every day, because I needs to practice)

This is amazing.
I often forget how much effort has to go into paintings.

Thank you. Sometimes you know right from the off if a painting is going to work or not. I couldn't tell with this one. Only near the end did I feel alright with what I did. The amount of paintings that I paint over because they just haven't worked is incredible and frustrating at times.

I kind of know how you feel.
I don't paint but i find myself erasing a lot of my drawings and things because i didn't like the way they turned out.... of course it doesn't realy compare in the amount of time that must be put in.

And it's even better to work cause you can water it down and work with layers So you can have oil painting effects or watercolour effects

always interests me to see how artists' pieces progress. Bet you get severly annoyed with it at time haha

I laughed when i saw you started with darker colours; I was ALWAYS bollocked at school for starting off with dark colours when painting! XD i was commanded to always start with lighter colours first XD

At times, when I'm doing a painting, I HAVE to take breaks or I will go insane! The beginning of a painting always looks rubbish and there's a fear that it won't turn out as you want and that's where the hair pulling really starts

It always made me laugh listening to teachers, lecturers bang on about protocol in art...there isn't any, you do what you're comfortable with and anything goes. However they have to say something so rules are applied, even when they are not needed. I could follow all the 'rules in art' and come up with a painting I wouldn't wipe my bottom with

Dude, you should've told them they were stifling your creativity and keeping you from seperating yourself from the common painter...

That's what my friend does in art class.

Yes you will. I'm 31 now (christ that sounds so old!) Draw, paint everyday and you will improve. I like to think I improve each painting I tackle. Remember, nothing...absolutely nothing is impossible to do, you just gotta want.
