Description 'You remind me of the babe'

This is Jareth (Goblin King) and Sarah at the masquerade ball in the film Labyrinth. I love this movie and thought it was a bit spooky and wierd when I was younger...still do, in fact.

Here we have Jennifer Connelly attempting not to stare at David Bowie's codpiece

Painted in acrylic. Turned out a bit dark but so do all my paintings.

I insist you seek out the movie or try to catch it when next on tv! It's an excellent fantasy film. The visuals really are clever

I don't expect any Polish TV station to show this movie. But maybe I'll search in other sources.

Ahhh, I actually haven't seen it on UK tv for some time (or else I've just missed it). It's worth seeking out though...great movie.

Thanks very much. I actually painted Jennifer (Sarah) first and worked gradually to the left of the pic, finishing with Bowie.

Sure, me too - it's the one with the massive doggy - dragon with big droopy eyes NO that's Never Ending Story . . . I'll have to put it on my Rent list, because the only thing I remember was BOWIE's in it

You know, I've never seen Never Ending Story, and yet everyone else has. I missed out on these movies as a kid (no idea why) but I only just caught The Princess Bride last month!!! Labyrinth though...Bowie + big hair = Winnah!

oh yes to big hair Bowie From what I remember of Neverending, it was lame, and seemed to never end

I'm glad I missed it then! The title seemed a bit funny to me. Even as a kid 'The Never Ending Story' made me question why the movie was only a couple of hours long, if it was never ending

I like this movie (and I love Bowie !!!... hum, sorry... ^^+). Beautiful picture ! With the great final in the "Escher stairs", the scene of the ball is one of my favourites ! (all the masks ! I love masks ! So mysterious... Like in "Eyes wide shut"... but this movie is not for the same audience !! )

Bowie is stunning. The Escer stairs was a brilliant visual, really well done. I really appreciate the visual impact of this movie...Yeah, it was strange and otherworldy, but that's exactly how it should be.

I haven't actually seen Eyes wide shut, yet another movie I will have to view

Well, in "Eyes wide shut", you have a very impressive scene with masks... but it isn't for children ! ^^+ It's an excellent movie, but could be disturbing...

There's something deeply intriguing and mysterious about masks. The hidden face promises suprise or horror...that's probably why I like 'em. Also It's been many many years since I was a child, so it should'nt warp my little mind too much

Falang In reply to sullen-skrewt [2008-01-18 13:50:13 +0000 UTC]

When I said it was "not for children", I didn't mean you !! ^^ But you know certainly what the movie talk about !

About masks, I feel the same way as you about them. You could never know what could be hidden behind them. That's why I like so much the Batman character, and the movies of Burton and Nolan. In "Batman begins", at the end, Rachel Dawes says to Bruce Wayne that Batman is now his real face, the mask is him. I like this idea. And in "The dark knight", the fact that the Joker wears make-up is interesting (and not "acid-discoloured"), because it means that he is become this "Prince Clown" but we could never know who he was before : he choose to be this character.

In "Labyrinth", the ball scene is beautiful and terrifying in some way.

There is something of Fellini in the idea of mask, I think (like the beginning at Venice's carnival in "Casanova"). Don't know why. But it's my feeling.

Bugger! my age precedes me

100% agree with you about the masks. The idea that Batman is the real Wayne is spot on. Since he was a child that need for Justice (and revenge) makes up most of Bruce Wayne the man. The mask is seeing that idea in form. Bruce the playboy is fiction, the Batman is not. I also like the idea of the Joker choosing to apply make up, to become what he is, because it strengthens the tie between himself and Batman, in that they both chose to become something else, to hide their true selves but for entirely different reasons - two sides of the same coin. However the Joker's scarring (scarred side of the coin, anyone? ) might look like a brutal smile which causes him to change his persona from an event which was traumatic to him, which again ties with Bruce Wayne and his trauma from the death of his parents to facing, and even using his fear of bats to create his persona.

As the Joker says in the prologue of the movie : "What doesn't kill you make you feel... "stranger" !" (or something like that !! )

I'm not an expert of the comics world (old X-Men until 1986 with the complete re-issue and the great "1602", Hellboy and BPRD comics, "Dark Knight" by Miller and "Arkham Asylum" by Morrison/McKean). I see many movies (Darkman, V, Fantastic Four, Spiderman, X-men...), but Batman (movies & comics) stays my favourite for his dark atmosphere and his ambiguous hero : "he is just a freak... like me" as the Joker still says ! ^^ I hope Nolan will preserve this characteristic. I think so.
