I really advise not using a reference or looking at one too much when you draw, because once you start doing that your drawing skills will improve by over half your current skill >w<

I guess I have to agree with you there, I have been noticing that the quality of my non-reference drawings have increased by at least HALF when I use skills learned from reference drawing

Shading isn't even half as bad as it sounds, as long as you're not going to try painting, all you have to do is find a good shading colour, then abuse the blur tool ^^
