Hailing from ancient Sparta, Clio Erganes, also known as The Historian, is the captain of the 9th division and the head of the Shinigami operations archives, the Seireitei library, and documenting techniques and fighting styles for future academy use. She was, before becoming a captain, the tactics and warfare history teacher at the Shino Academy. Clio is also notably one of the souls who was lost to the Dangai for many years, recovered and rehabilitated many years after her actual death.

Clio is a huge personality contained in a tiny person. Boisterous, social and talkative, most people note she has a keen observational eye and never seems to forget details about people. Clio keeps herself the busiest out of the captains, volunteering her time for multiple massive projects such as the Shinigami Tactics Archive and dusting off and maintaining the once-laughable Gotei library. She is playful, but has a serious, dangerous edge to her and is open about how much she enjoys the thrill of battle. In fact, she attacks everything she does with a single-minded focus, and its hard to stay close friends with her because she neglects personal relationships in favor of her work and her captaincy. She can count her friends on one hand, but her division is filled with people inspired by her dedication to the Gotei and her ability to connect and dedicate equal time to battle and scholarship.

Her zanpakuto is called Oînops Póntos (Wine-Dark Sea) and is classified as a melee type. In its released form, Oînops Póntos appears as two identical spatha swords. Its powers are said to give Clio the power of 'absolute attack', and Oînops póntos's techniques allow Clio to bypass defenses set up by her opponent, inflicting physical damage to her opponent even if they're blocking or wearing armor. Her bankai is said to be one of the most destructive weapons in Gotei history, as it can cause irreversible destruction-wounds impossible to heal, damage to physical constructs that can never be repaired.
