Description
This is Marlen Adams, lieutenant of Division 3 alongside Reuben, and a visored. The piping on her kosode signifies she is a recruiter.

Marlen is one of the younger lieutenants, having been born in the early 1900s in St. Louis. Her family was low, low class, and was actually illegal (her father was African American and her mom was latina). Despite this, she was raised happily, and raised to be a fighter... which is exactly what she did in joining an underground women's boxing league. (yes this was a thing haha)

Marlen's luck, however, ran short at age 20 when she got involved in the East St. Louis riot.

She arrived in Soul Society in the middle of the second Quincy War, and after a few weeks of hearing rumors about it she decided to try to see if she had the potential to be a Shinigami- that was a resounding yes. SHe quickly proved herself a capable fighter in the academy, and graduated a year early thanks to her hard work, constant study, and top of the class status in hakuda and near tops in hoho, as well as a strange aptitude in kido she hadn't expected. The war ended, however, before she graduated.

She joined the fifth Division under Tasunka as a way to improve her kido further, and when the Espada war started up she was sent into Hueco Mundo for the war effort. Her skills and aptitude were inspiring to her peers, and she earned a promotion to 15th seat, before quickly gaining seats up to the 8th. Upon her last promotion, the captain of the 3rd Division, Regan, requested her transfer to the close-combat oriented division as the 6th seat.

An incident toward the end of the war, however, caused Marlen to become infected by a hollow, and she was forced to undergo hollowfication. Not wanting to lose the young charge Regan had become so fond of, she hid Marlen away from the rest of the division, informing only Tasunka of her condition. Tasunka decided to help, and sealed Marlen away until she could get control of herself. When she did, Regan returned her to limited duty for the very end of the war, knowing she couldn't let the unstable visored stay.

When they all returned to Soul Society, Regan got in contact with her former friend and exiled visored, Reuben Rockwell, and requested he train Marlen to conceal her Visored nature so she could return to Soul Society in secret. Disguising Marlen's move as a 'personal training exercise', Regan delivered Marlen to the World of the Living, where she stayed with Reuben for several years.

The two lived in the eastern US, and between training Marlen decided to learn human trades, and got involved at a friend of Reuben's mechanic shop, where she learned to fix up cars. After Rueben deemed her fit to return, however, she eagerly went back to Soul Society where she took the lieutenant spot Rega had been holding for her.

She remained under Regan's command until the Shadow invasion, where her status as a Visored was revealed, and immediately pardoned. She remained the 3rd's lieutenant, and was reunited with Reuben.

She loves learning new skills, and her curious and extroverted nature has caused her to acquire and refine a large assortment of random skills, from boxing to mechanic work to needlepoint. She also has an underlying intelligence and ability to focus that makes grasping new concepts a little easier for her than most. Marlen's positivity is sometimes undermined by an aggressive and competitive streak- she strives to prove herself and be the best in any task she sets her sights on. Though she enjoys the company of others, work and her contributions to the Gotei and her job are priority one, and she is quick to sever ties with people she feels are toxic to her success. Marlen prefers direct confrontation over being passive, so whatever she presents is exactly what you get with her.
