Description This painting was inspired by an episode of Terry Madden's Watercolor Workshop I saw on TV. In his version he had one Geisha doing another's hair, in a similar pose to mine.

I decided to make my version using my own drawing and Maiko instead of Geisha for two reasons. First I like the more fancy costumes they wear. And second I just wanted to do something a little different from what he had done.

I did the original sketch on my computer in November and painted with watercolors & metallic paint pens. The painting was finished December 25, 2004 and was given as a gift to my niece for her birthday.

*Sorry about the small size on the print. Unfortunately the only copy I have of it was pretty small.

Geiko wear 'fancy costumes' as well just a little more subdued.
and they don't do each others hair. Maiko go to a special hair dressor.
Their obi is wrong too. Maiko obi is called Darari and flows to their ankles.
sleeves are too short they swing to right passed their knees. Kimono is called Hikizuri.
I did 50+ hours of research before I ever thought about drawing a Maiko or Geiko because I wanted to correctly portray them. I still learn new things about their way of life. I recommend the same if you choose to continue with Geiko and Maiko.

Thanks for the info.
At the time I did this I was copying a similar pose done by another artist (for learning purposes) & I guess I didn't do enough research to check his accuracy. I'll keep what you said in mind for future works.

it reminds me of the style of painting that my sister does with pastels.
here are some of her works

you draw kimonos very beautifully! I like the colour scheme in this (and your other) pictures. You have good sense when you choose them. What else about this pic? I like how the main ideas of this picture, the kimono, their faces, their hair, is fairly simple with a few well chosen details in it. Like how you didn't have a really intricate pattern on the kimono, just a simple repeating pattern. Then you have a bunch of detail on some of the small things, like their hair ornaments and stuff

Hmmm... I haven’t really given it much thought. I kind of draw whatever interests me the most at that moment or if I see something that inspires me. Knowing my love of the orient & all the positive feedback I’ve gotten from this picture though I’m sure I will.
