Description Some Pratchett fan art for a change. Done in Painter & Photoshop. I spend an insane amount of time just trying to learn to draw birds for this, damn those feathers!

This is really phenomenal. Maybe it could use a few darker shadows, but apart from that it's flawless. I think the time you spent on birds really paid off, the feathers, particularly those little highlights, look fantastic.

Thanks! It's always hard to find the correct balance of the darkest shadows for me, especially tricky for a piece like this that has a lot of black, since I don't generally like using a lot of darks in my pieces. Here I tried to concentrate the highest contrast on the face only, but I recognize it might not have been totally successful!

Well I tend to go overboard with shadows in my work, so I probably shouldn't be talking.

After reading your comment I took another look at this piece and I realized that the contrast is highest on the face, making it that much more menacing. I guess I was too busy staring at the bird to notice! That's no fault of yours though, it's just a really impressive bird.

Thanks! Yeah I think something like tweaking values and learning new things about them is just something that you never get over and stop learning, I've always preferred a very subtle approach to value, but sometimes it's just really hard to find that good balance. I really wish I had some proper time to do a few life studies in oils right now! For some reason balancing value in traditional media always seems easier/ more intuitive for me.
