Description Founded in 1641, St. Ignatius is one of the oldest Catholic Parishes in continuous service in the United States. Fr. Andrew White and other Jesuits sailed on the Ark and the Dove to help found an English Colony, permitting freedom of religion. Fr. White settled among the Potobac Indians at Chapel Point, learned to speak their language, and soon baptized their Indian Tayak or Chief. Although often tried by repressive laws, the Jesuits continued to serve colonists, Indians, and slaves from the "olde wooden chapelle" by the point, and later from "Paradise Hill." Supplies from the Manor Farm were offered to the Americans attacking Yorktown. With the return of peace, the present church was built in 1798. It was blessed by John Carroll, the first bishop of Baltimore. Though suppressed worldwide in 1773, the Society of Jesus was restored in America by those who took their vows in this church in 1805. From here, saddle priests rode forth to serve all of Charles County, as well as parts of Prince George’s and Calvert Counties. Union troops occupied St. Thomas Manor during the Civil War. Fire substantially destroyed the interior of the church and Manor House on December 27, 1866. However, by June 7, 1868, both were restored and rededicated. For over 150 years, St. Thomas Manor at St. Ignatius was the home of Superiors of the Maryland Mission. Many missionaries lived and worked here. Courageous people worshiped here despite severe obstacles to their faith, and the famous visited for advice and counsel. From this manor, priests attended Catholics in an area from Virginia to Pennsylvania, developing new missions and establishing new residences. From here, all the older parishes of Charles County have been attended, and most were founded by priests of St. Thomas Manor.

I'm going to start taking pics of all old churches I see (obviously that I can), probably not that old though. Just took one that is on a corner with no way to get rid of power lines in the original photo. After I try to get rid of the lines it will be on.

The power lines are always an issue. I have some great shots of churches if I could just lose the power lines!

I got a shot yesterday with no power lines will be on one of these days. It is built like an old church (bell in the steeple), but looks new. There wasn't a sign stating age but it was in a State Park. Maybe new paint job - don't know but I like it.

You'll be getting it, though I'm not at all happy. If I didn't open my big mouth it probably wouldn't be here. The weather was so gray, just couldn't get to what I saw in my head. Oh well another time, another church. I know you'll be getting it anyway but tried to give you a link and got the error screen again. It's the Island Home Baptist Church.

The only thing I could suggest is to crop it some so you can rotate the church a little to straighten it. I love churches...I need to do more myself!

I was so unhappy about the photo being so "washed out" from the gray weather that I didn't even notice that it wasn't straight. I've got a free program that was recommended to me by a camera store that made it extremely easy to straighten - click on "straighten" and a grid appears indicating just how far off it was. If you're interested in another program let me know. (Didn't have to crop, it took care of it.) Never used that feature before, was nice.

Thanks much, it is now.

I was going to post only old churches but maybe not, we'll see how it goes.

It looks great now June! What program did you use....It's nice you didn't have to do a crop and rotate yourself!

Try [link] for the free download. On the page the link takes you to you'll see part of the icon that took me to the "straighten".

When I got my previous camera the salesman recommended this program and I agree, I really like it!!!

It doesn't do everything (frames, etc) but the price is definitely right at $0.00!!!

Enjoy
