Description
So I thought I would post a closeup so people could see how I work. Hopefully in fullview you can see all the squigglies and brushlines. Usually in horses the fine hair detail is lined in the direction of the hair - in this one this guy I think was faily short coated and with the sheen and sweat I thought round squgglies would give a better texture to the finish.First I draw out the basic shapes - heavily referenced, and maybe shift a few things to balance out the picture a bit.
Then basically I paint the gross details - large airbrush 15-20% opacity. Then as I more into an area I paint finer details 10 - 15% opacity but with lighter strokes. It almost looks finished at that phase but without the highest highlights. If needed I will countershade the fine details(is darker brush than the background) and paint the hairs/grass etc. Then I overlay that on the same canvas with the highlights - pretty much right at the white or very intense white orange or blue grey depending on the light source as squggles. Both the counter dark shade and white highlights in this case are with a brush at 9 - 15% opacity depending on the distinctness of texture I am looking for.
You can see at this detail it looks rather ugly in a disturbingly organic way with that color choice lol. But in the big picture it looks more natural with a common colors of light sources and shadows and reflective light sources.
It help to work on rather large canvas sizes - this one is 7K X 5K and as fine a resolution as my program will go. Tablet is a must for me as is pressure sensitive pen.
