Description A really fantastical painting of the two Elder Scrolls characters for Cammando12 , thank you so much for the commission! These just might be the most detailed characters I've painted so far, and it took me a while but I'm super happy with how it turned out.

I love the way you give this a traditional painting feel. The texture makes it feel like you added dry brush for a more tangible forest, and the color choices aren't so saturated that it makes me think it's too fan-service trendy. My biggest pet peeve in most trendy fantasy art today is that skin is way too smooth and glossy, which is not how skin should look, lol. You did well in making skin look like skin. My favorite fantasy painters, like Keith Parkinson, had a similar vibe to his use of color and lighting. The blurred foreground is something I don't see a lot of people do anymore.

And also... I need to play more ESO... I keep staring at it in Steam, then telling myself, "Tomorrow..."

Oh wow, thank you so much for the kind words! I think partly the reason the textures look so "rough" in this picture is because it's quite small (I usually have like 10k pixels in length but have to scale it down a lot for the PNG to make it 10MB, which makes some of the brushstrokes look a lot more grainy than they were originally). I'm so glad you like it though! I'm not a fan of plastic-soft skin either, although I definitely want to learn to do a softer texture, too.

I haven't actually looked at his work before, it's very pretty! My paintings in the past have been very dark in general so I've been trying to push brighter lights and more contrast between the darkest and the lightest parts. I have mixed feelings about using blur in digital paintings, to be honest! I've used it sometimes and I know it can create a really cool cinematic atmosphere, for example WLOP makes a great use of them and it really works in his paintings - then again, I absolutely love the classical painting look of some other digital painters, and they seem to use as few Photoshop effects as possible, so I'm a bit torn haha!

And oh no! Just make some time for it every now and then! (or not, if it takes time away from work/art/school!)

What I'm seeing in the textures isn't artifacting (what makes rasters look blotchy). I actually see good use of creating texture on surfaces that fit with brush strokes. Meaning, whatever you use to digitally paint, the way you use those brushes is more akin to traditional. I'm not sure why more digital artists haven't taken advantage of that. What makes it really stand out is in the metallic gold areas. It doesn't look like you half-heartedly used dodge/burn to throw down highlights and shading. Sure, it's good up to a pint, but that prevents an artist from hitting true depth in colors. And with a solid pallet, you can bring out so much in your art.

My biggest pet peeve is when art just looks satiny smooth with no transition between stone, glass, skin, hair, or armor. Why stop there? I realize with promo art, it's easier to submit the concept work, but give people something to collect! It's one reason I'm not a big fan of the art coming out of Wizards of the Coast.Β  RIP Keith Parkinson. At least Larry Elmore is still going strong.

But as far as effects go, if you want to create blur without using blur, opt for a fuzzy-edged brush, and set the brush to a low opacity, like 20%. From there, you can layer on, just like you would watercolor. You're not "cheating" in that sense. I work the same way, trying not to use effects unless I feel like it'll expedite the process, and it won't make sense to hand-paint it. Effects aren't bad. There are shortcuts in traditional painting as well. Centuries ago, the Camera Obscura was used to project a person's likeness onto a canvas, which was traced upside down. Today, it's not unheard of to use a projector for difficult subjects, to trace it onto a canvas. Watercolor is full of shortcuts for cool textures and layering methods. So... I say go for it.

If I'm all over the place, I'm sorry. Sometimes my brain moves faster than my fingers.
