I can´t let you go,
not now, gosh no!
It wouldn´t feel right,
I still need you so.
A line in a poem
said "Please set me free"
but what is then left?
A wreck that was me.
I am already half
the person I was,
so setting you free
would defeat the cause
of trying to keep myself together,
your memory being the only tether,
that keeps my soul from falling apart
and breathes some life into my broken heart.
So I can´t let you go,
not ever, Hell NO!

I really loved it! Super talented poem, precise but full of emotions that slice. Many of my writing as a theme of the struggle to let go....Please check out mine?

Thank you so much for this lovely comment, I started writing aprox 2 1/2 years ago after I lost my husband  to cancer and it has proved better than any therapy. It has really helped me to release my grief and keep me sane. Thank you

I truly believe that, in time, little by little, the pain will pass but your memories are forever

Supach In reply to LittleFawnsPhotos [2016-02-23 22:16:02 +0000 UTC]

I think the pain of someone passing will always hurt but with time a person just learns how better to cope with it, so the hurt doesn´t bring them to their knees so often. it still hurts but the person knows what to expect so is prepared to hurt on the day of their death, their birthday, easter, christmas and holiday time, when their favourite song plays on the radio when you miss them so much that you feel your heart will burst if you don´t see them again and because these events repeat themselves again and again although the pain is still as strong  as it was before, their reaction to it  weakens. Does that make any sense to you? So it appears to the outside world that the person is not grieving anymore but really inside their life is no longer or ever will be the same again. That is true however, the memories stay, they are forever.

What you have written does make sense to me. I am glad you have your poetry, somewhere to express how you feel.  For me it is my art and photography, I pour all my feelings into them.  I think having an outlet for pain helps and it touches other people who feel the same

Yes I agree writing down my feelings is such a help for me even if no one reads it. It´s still like sharing a trouble with someone who understands and knows what I am going through.
I have looked at your wonderful gallery You have some absolutely beautiful photographs that are truly works of art, so lovely to look at

Thank you  Editing my photos or creating photomanipulations does for me what writing poetry does for you. It gives me a place to express how I feel and if it touches other people that is a bonus.

Sometimes reading someone else's pain helps me understand my own

You commented on my poem ,"This one is About Me," ages ago. We have a mutual friend in Lars who loves your work. He's right, you touched my soul.
I lost a child and read of your loss; you've got the emotions perfectly.

No you can't let go in many ways.  - what you have written feels painful.  As if you feel obliged to sever.  You can only be you and feel the way you feel - Ah now I have just seen that you read something that made you feel this way. The poem was literal. You are not keeping him from happiness by keeping his memories alive - I'm sure there are happy ones amongst the sad ones.  All of us get sad and some keep sadness longer than others and to different depths - we are only human.  Yes I can really feel the pain in this but I don't believe in this thing of letting go and setting free.  The poem from Henry Scott Holland you quoted is the one to keep in mind.  The only thing you need to let go is the painful idea that you are holding back your loved one.  I too have often read of things that I believed I would have to do that were painful in a spiritual sense but ultimately I have looked into myself and questioned was such an action necessary. You really do not need to put yourself through any more pain than you are feeling.

Supach In reply to shelleypalmer [2016-02-21 23:10:36 +0000 UTC]

The poem I read gave me the feeling that in letting go, setting him free so to speak, then I would regain some of the old me again and be happier knowing that the person is free and is also happy, it honestly made me cry and in that very moment I knew I couldn´t let go and would never let go. So I must live with my pain and my loss and just go on as best I can without him. It´s hard sometimes, really hard...............

shelleypalmer In reply to Supach [2016-02-22 00:58:43 +0000 UTC]

I can understand how that must have felt because you loved him so deeply and wanted to do the right thing for him and for yourself.  Sometimes there is no right thing.  He is free anyway and understands how you feel. I hope you can move on from that poem because it seemed to me that it was giving a message to you that was not realistic. Also I think that perhaps it might be interpreted in different ways. If only you had someone - a friend maybe who had been through something similar they would agree with your feelings.  It is really really hard when you love that deeply but I'm sure you would not wish that love away.  Carry on expressing it in any way you want to.  I dont think we ever regain our old selves after pain of that kind, but it becomes part of us, though it is not to say we will never feel happy in any way ever again.  The words that you read must have cut so deep because you are very sensitive and still very much in love, which will continue for the rest of your life and beyond!  I am saying these things because I know that you believe in the after life as I do - I have no doubts and hope you will take a little comfort at this time to know that everyone reading your poems feels for you and are sending good wishes.

Sweet of you to say that.  When anyone comments, advises, sympathizes or creates from the heart the soul may be perceived in that way.  There are many on DA who fit this title including Suzanne and yourself.
