Description We Canadians have a national sport: that is we love to compare ourselves to our neighbours to the south. But it's only natural, I think. America is, in all respects, our big brother in the world. We all look up to our big brothers, sometimes resent them, sometimes argue with them, and sometimes seek their attention. But always, in the end, we love our big brother.

My personal relationship with America is similar. I am often frustrated by American government policies, and by certain aspects of American culture. However, each time I visit America, my respect for the American people deepens. American people always welcome me into their homeland with warmth and friendship. I admire the great achievements and confidence of the American spirit. I know and love my American friends whose personalities and generosity are as vast as the nation they inhabit.

These are the feelings that inspired this photo. Today is Independence Day, and I can't think of a better day on which to express them. On your day, America, I salute you.

Well, governments are temporary. Hopefully the principles manage to stand and improve for the long haul.

Mmm...
I have my own feelings about our government policies and general attitudes...
But there is still some pride in seeing something like this.

Besides, the shot is beautiful. Love the colors, and the lighting makes it stronger... more powerful...

this.

You know you've done well on a photo when... I look at this shot kev, and I even feel a sense of pride, the lighting, the meaning behind the capture, everything about it is just wow. There is something about a nations flag, be it ours, our neighbours to the south or any nation that that unites us all and its the pride of "Our" nation, the joy of seeing it hoisted upon a victory, or celebration, your photo has captured that essence perfectly (I'm rambling I know, I haven't had my coffee yet and my brain is all )

I think the Canadian flag is actually more 'beautiful'. It has that...innocences and that quality of love to it. I was watching CBC the other day, and they had 10 min presentation on our flag--beautiful story

Proud to be ! yaya lol

Well I think you should salute me instead, Kevin, I'm the one who's "Born in 4th of July"

This is a nice photo the colour contrast and the lines are really amazing! It's not that "usual" flag picture...

Yay for the United States, even with all the controversy around what they do... Or even don't do

And a happy Canada Day to you sir! (July 1st, I believe?)
Thanks much!

It's good to know that some people still think highly of America. I admit I've had my doubts about my homeland recently, but hearing such kind words from a Canadian really brightens my day.

every deviation i make is a canada day deviation, but i don't mind giving credit where credit is due. you can not truly say you look down on america unless you can also say that you've never enjoyed an american movie, never been entertained by an american television show, never danced to american music, never had an american friend. if you can say all of those things, then you deserve that high horse you're sitting on. otherwise it's blanket prejudice, which isn't really very canadian at all, is it?

Thanks for your wonderful words.

And wonderful shot of the flag, that has been photographed so much it's almost impossible to get an "original" shot of it; however, with your unusual cropping, you have succeeded. I really like this. Great color, great capture.

Beautiful shot, and great comment.

America really can present both sides of the coin.
The same government can be the instigator of peace, or the starter of war.
The culture can bear great kindness and great hatred.

And best of all, this country can disagree with itself without collapsing.

The colors and lightning are excellent. I would like to visit Canada someday, but seeing as how the northernmost I've ever been is Delaware, and my soul is really back in the South, it doesn't seem as though it will ever happen...
