Description We Canadians have a national sport: that is we love to compare ourselves to our neighbours to the south. But it's only natural, I think. America is, in all respects, our big brother in the world. We all look up to our big brothers, sometimes resent them, sometimes argue with them, and sometimes seek their attention. But always, in the end, we love our big brother.

My personal relationship with America is similar. I am often frustrated by American government policies, and by certain aspects of American culture. However, each time I visit America, my respect for the American people deepens. American people always welcome me into their homeland with warmth and friendship. I admire the great achievements and confidence of the American spirit. I know and love my American friends whose personalities and generosity are as vast as the nation they inhabit.

These are the feelings that inspired this photo. Today is Independence Day, and I can't think of a better day on which to express them. On your day, America, I salute you.

Well from an American (and a southerner at that since I'm from North Carolina) this shot is indeed beautiful. :] Thanks for you words; I see a lot of American-bashing on international sites like this...your words really mean a lot.
p.s. I've always wanted to visit Canada >.>

I go to North Carolina every year and have a great time there because of all the great friends I've met there. You should definitely visit Canada some time

I like the picture, it's great. And I really liked what you said. I'm from Alaska, so it's sort of like its own country really [a lot different from the US and Canada]. Anyways, I like Canada. Even though the typical people will say we don't like each other, I do agree that we are like brothers. We don't like each other in ways, but deep down, we have respect for one another and enjoy each other.

I don't know if I made any sense, but I agree with you.

P.S.
And while I am extremely patriotic to the United States and would do anything to save it, I do get really upset with the government sometimes.
I could go on about politics so....

very nice picture. I live in America and i can say that you've pretty much got it right. our government is nowhere near the perfect system our founding fathers had pictured (I'm native american so i do have some resentment of our past, as you can imagine). But the few cannot represent the many, and people here are mostly great. Also I've visited montreal and some areas are just awesome!

i don't if it's because i'm from Québec but i don't feel exactly the same thing..When i see a flag of United-States... i think to all things them gouvernement make poeple feel and what it do to other countries and land... i can make a difference between poeple and gouvernement but whats bug me is that the gouvernement is choice by the people...

like the way your picture is took

i don't like the government either. but the flag represents the people, who are generally decent folks. governments come and go, but the people remain.

I like the photo, It's pretty, and I also like your idology and feelings...

However, I dont think you need to look up to another country, I agree some of the people there i do look up to, and they are a strong hearted people... However I tend to think America is overated, especially the whole "American Dream"

You could almost compare it to some forms of nazism and dictatorship or atleast there is some form of world domination plan there. Almost everything you see on Australian television is American... Most of Australian food is owned now by America. The government here is turning more and more into America, and theres a vibe that almost everything Australian is converting to Americanism

America as powerful as it is, is high on a power trip. They think theyre all high and mighty because they can bomb a whole contry using the excuse that they are wipeing out terrorists...
They were looking for Bin Laden originally... but oh hey, theres an opportunity to gain oil... so lets blow up this small third world country first! funny how Bin Laden seems to have slipped away again

If I were American, I'd proberbly be charged with being a traitor just for having my own views... And god forbit someone says that they love Iraqis and Arabs coz in America you might just happen to look like a traitor who encourages "terrorism"

You never hear much about Canadians though. They seem to be peacfull loving people who just get bullied by Americans... but then they start to suck up the Americans asses just so that they will be protected...

I dont hate America... But I certainly dont love it either. I say, pay tribute to your own country, and honour your own flag... Don't become the next Australia

good work and I like how you brought out these feelings and emotions in people

thanks for your thoughts. i admire your straightforwardness.

i certainly don't agree with the actions of the american government or the apparent motives behind those actions. american governments have done despicable things going back to the vietnam war, the korean war, and as far back as the phillipines in 1899. however, my photo is dedicated to the individuals whom i meet when i travel in america. and we canadians admire the confidence and innovation that comes out of america, which does enable it unfortunately to overshadow the cultures of other nations. i don't think canadians suck up to americans at all for protection. we have a long tradition of friendly relations between our countries. we have the odd rough patch, but we hardly roll over to their demands.

i honor my own flag every day of my life. however, it doesn't prevent me from accepting and acknowledging the positive side of another nation on that nation's day of celebration.

Monque [2005-07-05 00:08:06 +0000 UTC]

Indeed it is beautiful. So sad how petty issues and opinions-of-the-moment seek to cloud over that beauty.
"American" is such a wonderfully fluid concept. Americans are Swedish, Mexican, English, Russian, etc... and when you honor
the flag or ideal of the country, you also honor "American" involvement in "American" wars, "American" commerce, and "American" livlihood.

Thanks for this picture and a reminder of a great country comprised of every ethnicity or code or opinion bonded together -- happily or not --
under one banner, one Constitution. After all, if we don't have that basic social unity, what do we have? up to you, Superkev!
