"Why... are we fighting?" Annaplian said, abruptly and out of nowhere. She did this sometimes - Mudkid thought to himself. Probably she had been stewing on this question for weeks, months even, despite how casually she mentioned it.

"How do you mean?" Mudkid said, knowing exactly what she meant because of course, she was a personality clone of his, after all, now centuries worth of experience divergent. Now, they were older brother and kid sister.

"I think you know what I mean," Annaplian responded.

"I still need you to say it." Mudkid said to his sister, mind to mind over the thousand-kilometre gulf between their vessels. He was trying to unpack it all, a thousand years of history, politics, sociology, this would have been easy to telepathically stream, multi-threaded, if their minds had not been changed, hardened, closed down and reinforced to deal with the psychotropic rigours of modern space warfare. "And why now?" He added.

"I think you know why now," Annaplian said expectantly, and Mudkid did know. Mudkid was no-longer as curious, no longer needed or desired conflicting viewpoints. His were now set in stone, a cynic who knew what he wanted from life, and knew that it would be enough. Annaplian was still curious, almost scientific in her pursuit of comparison and sentiment. He guessed that this desire to chronicle, a trait completely foreign to him, lay at the core of who she now was.

"Ok then. We have a Utopia, a functional, if crooked, partially corrupt post-scarcity dreamworld. You can exist, eat your own mass in food, or consume a similar amount in mass-energy, sleep, fuck, spawn offspring, fight, live forever, die, go to heaven and hell, and be reborn, then experience a thousand more years of the same, all in one day of real objective time, every day, forever, and for everyone. And if that isn't enough, you can leave, really leave, taking with you as many who'd follow into a reality perpendicular from even the concept of the multiverse. Arkaedos and Kacylis are Utopia; strong, everlasting, fragile and delicate things. And they are falling apart. And we are fighting because what else would humans do when the house is on fire?"

"So you think everything will collap..."

"Yes." Mudkid said abruptly. "Maybe we'll destroy ourselves like the Sol Republic did. But there will always be those of us in the smoke and ashes, too stubborn to burn." There was a pause as both contemplated in the crystal clarity of vacuum. "Was that the answer you were expecting?"

"I... Actually, I don't know. "
