Description
My entry for the RWBY spring contest is finished! ...and I'm not that happy with it.Okay, so there are a few things I like about it. I had fun doing the original line art(which I didn't post on this folder, wanted to post it on the contest folder after I finished coloring) and colors. But I think after all is said and done, it ended up looking kinda boring.
I know I was aiming to make tranquil, but I ended up creating lifelessness. Ugh.
In retrospect, something like butterflies would totally help it come to life a bit more. But oh well, what can you do? Any other criticisms would be appreciated!

Yes, I saw that and thank you very much!
Honestly wasn't expecting anyone to rank me above a five or four in their rankings. If at all! But I'm happy to see that my piece was ranked rather positively! And by the group administrator no less!

Thank you very much! But I honestly knew I wasn't gonna make the top. I entered this contest with the intention of seeing how well my art would be placed in a competitive field. And get an idea as to what people pick up on in my art and what I should improve on. And considering the feedback, that mission was accomplished!
This contest was a lot of fun and I hope another one comes real soon!

Don't worry it's not lifeless, I think the color is amazing. Stunning. Just remember that backgrounds are pretty, but they make the character stand out less unless you edit the brightness and contrasts between them. Also, Ruby has no shadow so that makes it a bit less stunning.
Really good for traditional, could be better with digital adjustments.

Thank you! Okay, I'll keep that advice on backgrounds in mind. And yeah, Ruby lacking a shadow was a huge blunder on my part, I can't believe I forgot about that.
And yeah, sorry. I mean I do have some digital stuff like a tablet and Adobe Photoshop. But I've yet to figure out that stuff. But since summer approaches and school will be out in a couple of days, I'm sure I'll have plenty of free time to practice in that medium.
Thank you so much for your advice!

This i great! What did you use for the colors? They're so even!

Thank you!
As for colors, I use Copic markers. They're very expensive at $5-10 a marker( depending on where you shop. Online or at retail), but I think they're very high quality. And the cheaper refills they cell make an individual marker last a lot longer. It took me a year to build up the 40+ collection I have now. If you're very serious about art, I would recommend them!

Yeah, I have an orange one, but that's all lol I used to have more, but I bought a defective set, and had to return them, and never got into them again.
Where do you buy your copics? I bought mine at Michael's, because of the discounts, but at the same time, I felt their stock and upkeep was rather low quality... Also, it was messing up my inking when I colored. What do you use for linework on things like this?
Anyways, good luck in the contest! I've entered, too, but how could I not cheer for something like this? This is the second or third art contest I've ever entered, and I know I'm not exactly amazing, but it just feels so fun to participate, and to see all this great art!

Aw man, I'm sorry to hear about that. That must've really sucked.
I buy my Copics at Hobby Lobby. Although I also get them at DickBlick.com because they usually run for the price of $5. Which considering how much they usually go for is quite a deal! Their stock was low for the longest time. I think it was because a strike was hindering stock or something along those lines. I checked back though and it seems like they're doing fine now.
And as for inking, I just use Micron pens(I've actually been practicing with a brush pen on the side but I've yet to get the hang of it.
And yeah man! This is my first competition here on DA. And maybe my third ever. I think I read too much shonen because I always like seeing the best other people can do. Then compare my own skills to see how much farther I can go! I'm kinda childish like that. Either way, best of luck in the contest!

Aah, I was using a sharpie, and a levpen (Marvy). I think those are water-based inks, so maybe that's why.
I'm going to have to check into Dickblick, and hobby lobby. If I recall, Hobby lobby lock the case they keep their markers in, right? Michael's left them in the open, with a roll of paper next to them...

Well I'm unfortunately no expert on materials. But hey, at the end of the day, tools are just that.
And yeah, Hobby Lobby keeps them locked up until you're ready to buy. Although I THINK that's at the request of the manufacturers. And that's odd! At the Michaels in my are they have them locked up in a case too. Weird.:/

Maybe I'll check at others Michael's around me, too, since copics are so cheap there, thanks to the coupons.

Wow. It's really an impressive drawing. These details and colors shades are perfect !
But perhaps the top of Ruby's head (hair style) is a little bit disproportionate ? ^^

Excellent illustration, it feels like it pays homage to the original fairy tale along with the show.
Was it your intention to do that?

SuperSunnyDee In reply to bruiser128 [2016-04-26 19:20:59 +0000 UTC]
Thank you! And honestly, I don't remember if I do. Lol. The red riding hood walking through the forest is just such an iconic image that you kinda just become unaware of it after a while. The homage is definitely there and I think that I may have had that in mind when drawing this. But still, I can't really say it was intended.

bruiser128 In reply to SuperSunnyDee [2016-04-26 19:38:29 +0000 UTC]
Well it's a nice coincidence in my opinion, and I see you pulled the hood on Ruby unlike the Black and White version.
Although after season 3 I think Ruby aludes more to Angel of Death that LRR because her plans end in failure.

SuperSunnyDee In reply to bruiser128 [2016-04-27 00:44:07 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, it is. I like Ruby's hair quite a bit, so I drew her without the hood on. I just don't know why she would be wearing a hoodie on a sunny day.
And that's possible. But I think that she still holds a closer allusion to Red Riding Hood. Both were innocent and fun characters, but something happened that took their innocence. I can see where you're coming from with the angel of death.

Well she know hows to deceive people in how mature she really is thanks to sunny disposition.
And truth be told I don't think she ever WAS innocent, but rather it I only realized this after seeing a comment talk about her track record that there was a parallel with Texas from Red vs Blue.

SuperSunnyDee In reply to bruiser128 [2016-04-27 06:05:08 +0000 UTC]
True. But I don't think it'll come to that? The RWBY that I've grown to love and adore had tragedy, action and fun. It it wants to develop into a smarter story with deeper characters and darker moments like volume three then that's fine. But not to a point where Ruby will come to contemplate such a mentality. Maybe meet an character that embraces such a philosophy?
Sorry to sound like someone who may be stuck in the past. But despite what I heard about the first two volumes merely being setup, that was the show I grew to love. Flawed? Definitely. But if the first half of volume three was the last of the lighthearted moments and decided to go full-on edgy that I see so many fans pushing or gleeful over. Well sorry, but I don't think I'd be able to watch it anymore,

Honestly it would be nice knowing that the writers won't allow the series to become an endless cycle of despair and misery that Game of Thrones has devolved into, otherwise I will leave the fandom in the same way. I want something more in line with a television show from CW, where there is an equal balance between laughs and heartbreaks.^^

Yeah I really hope they don't decide to go totally despaired for the rest of the series.

bruiser128 In reply to SuperSunnyDee [2016-04-27 14:40:01 +0000 UTC]
Yeah although needing a comedic side series to alleviate negative feelings seems like they don't know how to balance the sad moments with positive ones, just like how they didn't know how to do world building without a side series to explain it all.
Just wondering but when Ruby awakened her powers after seeing Pyrrha get murdered by Cinder, did it resemble when Gohan ascended after seeing Android 16 murdered by Cell?

SuperSunnyDee In reply to bruiser128 [2016-04-28 04:11:33 +0000 UTC]
Yeah. You got a good point there. I really wouldn't care if that was there answer for such problems. Couldn't they mention some of the information dispensed in passing? Or just wait until they got to that point. I mean, even if it was years down the line they didn't establish anything that would contradict their lore.
And yes totally! I actually had planned to do a drawing with Ruby going super saiyan in a Chibi form. It would be an homage to the manga version of Goku's first transformation. I've been wanting to draw it while the idea is still up in the air, but I've lost my luster for it.

Yeah i mean mentioning these things in News clips would have a been an easy excuse, but remember that it was revealed that it's narrator is the real villain of the show.
I see less parallels with Goku going Super Saiyan than I do with Gohan's ascension to SSJ2. While we're on this track you watch the abridged version of this show, because I can TOTALLY see Android 16 playing the "Let It Go" song to make Gohan ascend?

SuperSunnyDee In reply to bruiser128 [2016-05-01 04:16:36 +0000 UTC]
Right? But when comparing Ruby and Phyraa, I'm mainly referencing the whole close friend thing. We ALL know that Penny is Android 16 and no one will take that away from her. Though to be fair we have seen a lot more of Ruby with Penny than Phyraa.
oh man I love TFS! Honestly, 'Let it Go' is such an overplayed song that I wouldn't mind something else. Just my thoughts. If it's from TFS' I can imagine a mix of emotional, introspective, and funny at the same time. If I were doing it myself, 16's speech wouldn't be touched. Gohan would reply with something like
"16. I-I...I understand now! I can't believe it!"
16:"I know it's a huge task given to you, but you must-"
Gohan:"You're the only one who actually knows a thing about me!"
16:"...Come again?"
Gohan: You know me better than my friends, my mom, Mr. Piccolo, and even my DAD! I don't wanna hurt anyone! You actually get-
16:"That's nice! But you need to pull out your power now!"(he says as we see a rising shadow and footsteps getting louder.
Gohan:" Of course! You're the closest thing I've got to an attentive friend! But how am I supposed to-"
Cell stomps on 16's head.
Gohan snaps.

"it ended up looking kinda boring. " - nope, yours was the first to catch my eye when I opened the rwby group, you handled the colors really well and it gave that sense of tranquility that you were aiming for.
the only thing that I noticed is that the cape could use a bit more shadowing to accentuate the wind effect on clothes and that ruby doesn´t have a shadow at all (beneath her)
In the end I think it turned out really good

I think it's great! The earlier pen/marker shading that you used with the line art really added you own unique shading style and i think it matches rather well! Boring? I think not! A lot of stuff is going on here i think, and i know i certainly wouldn't have had the patience for the details you put in with the flowers and trees. Well. Everything really! The rose petals trailing from Ruby's cape is a nice touch! Honestly, i can't really think of anything that really sticks out to me that i don't like~ Fabulous job!
