Description
Edit: For those who did not read due to the file being huge I made it actually readable because I was getting a lot of comments here and off of dA that it was too big. So, hope it's ok now... and notified in case someone couldn't read due to that issue.
IT READS FROM RIGHT TO LEFT LIKE REAL MANGA. And I numbered the pages to cause less confusion because I like ...causing a little confusion at least. XD
Oh my GOD... I died, this took so long. It basically took around 6 hours or so to get the story boards and an other 12 to do the inking and toning. BUT IT WAS WORTH IT... I don't even care if I don't place in the tournament. The reward is, I actually committed to something.
My first one too.
=goodcitizen 's character is pretty tough to draw. The Iron Maiden
I really hope it turned out ok, it's a little weak on the content side as death would be involved if I made any more pages. >_> ...epic battle ftw I guess. I guess in a contest battle your supposed to do damage to your opponent while remaining stylish? Hopefully this works XD
...uhm, all I can say for dial up users... make a pot of coffee and turn on the TV or watch something while this downloads. It's MASSIVE... but it had to be that way just because of the text and proper sizing of tones so they don't look gross. It's very high res.
I did have fun, it was actually mind numbing at times but I enjoyed it. Otherwise I would just give up... because saying you want to and actually doing it are two different things -- I was positive I was going to bail around wednesday but never doubt the power of crunch time you may get it a day early lol
I incorporated the theme 'being lost' into it -- but not ACTUALLY lost, just a little lost in thought... or in confidence, as it shows near the end... I had no idea how to get it in there somehow so he's off to find his true potential, hence the lost. C:
OK... I believe i am done. No individual files because I wanted all the comments / favs / anything else to be in one spot.

XD. The story was spaced out so far @_@; I hardly touched base on ANYthing o__o; it's embarrassing actually but we all learn from mistakes. I just waited until the last minute and had to pump out something artistic looking but never focused on the wording/story. Just kinda bam-bam-bam I win? yay!
That and I forgot the glasses on a lot of it |D

I thought it was kind of rushed, but I wasn't 100 percent sure. I did have trouble catching on to the story, even though I could make out that there was a battle.
Believe it or not, its more important to have a good story then your ability to draw.

wow!
that was awesome.
i believe you should do it like this. totally. it should be easier to draw colorlessly too.
if this was about to kill you then what would happen if you colored

I'm sorta sad that you weren't able to advance to the second round. I'd be more so sad if I hadn't been able to battle Iron Maiden after you which was an interesting expiriance to discuss with her to better get to understand her character.

I was actually one of the wild cards to round two, but still... I didn't make it as I didn't have an entry prepared. I was just swamped with other stuff D: It's cool though... although gives my ambition to make something comic-y a major plunge XP
I had difficulty with her character |D

Yeah. I ended up having to post my rough draft cause I was so swamped for time. I may end up dropping out of this round even though we have tons more time.

Can't imagine how much work truly goes into doing something like this, of such a large magnitude.
Definitely aware you've been told this time and time again, but I can't help but once again commend you on such an extremely cool and rather authentic manga experience. You deliver the whole package, it's scary almost. o__o;
Love the action, and the story so far. Keep it up bud!

Hope you don't mind if I ask a few questions...
Do you draw comics like this entirely in Photoshop, or do you make use of Illustrator for the linework, or do you use a different program altogether?
How do you achieve the screentones? Do you use pre-made screen blocks - cutting/erasing them to the shapes you wish, or do you convert gradients into screentones using the 'Colour Halftone' tools in Photoshop?
I'm asking because I'm interested in making black and white comics myself sometime, but I'm an Adobe Illustrator myself so I'd probably do the linework in Illustrator and shade it in Photoshop (I'm not sure if I can do tones like this in Illustrator).
Thanks in advance.

Oh ok, here goes: I use a program called Manga Studio 3.0 EX (it's basically industry for some manga artists in japan -- I think they have something to do with Tokyo Pop I'm not sure)
The program has 1000's of screen tones to choose from and are free to use (it's not like the tone is art -- in some cases they might be but it's all part of the program) And nope, no blocks to cut or erase, that's the joy of MS-EX, is that you can COLOR with screen tones it's very efficient.
I would invest or find a free download some wheres as it's probably one of the greatest programs I used focused heavily on one medium which is pure comic making.
You can't 'color with colors' in it very well though but it's still an excellent program. You just have to adapt to it, and get passed the really, really cluttered interface.
Hope this helps!

Right, so it's a completely separate program to Photoshop, but you can draw and tone in it?
Okay, I'll try looking into that, but I might play around with achieving effects like this in Illustrator too.
Thanks for the reply!

Oh gosh, and yes.. I was getting complaints from people I showed that it was too hard to read shrunk so I just made it huge so we could all read it. I didn't mind shifting from side to side so I thought it was ok.
I'll know for next time XD!
Thankyou

That's pretty flippin' sweet! Great application of tones - and you're right, they do look best in the big resolution. (I squished mine down, and some of them did the "moire" thing... ew.) I really like this comic, though, so good luck in the judging~!

I didn't even know if anyone had done that so away I want XD. I'll remember to check you so I don't use a similar concept haha.
