Awww....
A lot of the tools work the same in PSP if you have that...except the healing brush blendie thing...but I think that smudge works pretty well too!

Well I'll be damned, you draw your lineart in almost the exact way I do it! (i.e. drawing with the mouse rather than sketching on paper) Except with Paintshop Pro the pen tool acts a bit differently... perhaps not as good. Where yeh start colouring is where I lose yah, I'm stuck in the habit of using the fill tool, but perhaps I should try this method you use, by the looks of it it might help with the quality of my lineart.
Anyways, this is a very well set out tutorial, easy to understand (even though I've never used Photoshop!) and you put a lot of detail into it. Well played... makes me feel like creating one m'self

Thanks!
I used to use the fill bucket or the selection tool myself...but in Photoshop the paintbrush anti-aliases the lines...meaning that, to make the lines softer, it puts some grey at either side of the lines. While it makes the lines look nice, it makes it a pain in the but to fill, because you end up with a block of color, a thin whitish-grey line, and the black outline -_-
Plus, I make so many mistakes (I left them out of the tutorial!) that it helps me to have everything seperated.
I tried to draw in PSP and it seemed that the line quality while using the stylus was a little jagged rather than smooth...I don't know if it's PSP or just that my settings were off...
I'm glad that you enjoyed it though, it was fun to make!

Aaah, so you use a stylus huh... I should probably get something like that one of these days, I just use mah trusty mouse.
But yeah, the settings for the PSP lines work a bit differently to Photoshop... it's taken me a long time to find the right combinations to use so that the lines don't look too jagged :/

Much appreciated. A lot of work went into this, I can tell. Since I'm getting a tablet soon and I'm inept with them, this will probably help.
I always thought a super-rough sketch would be needed to ink with a tablet. So, yah. Great work!

Thanks! A lot of my friends got tablets, didn't like 'em, and they ended up at the bottom of a closet (in fact, that's how I "inherited" my first tablet) so when you DO get one, don't give up! It takes a long time to get used to, and at the beginning it will seem like it's more trouble than it's worth, but keep at it. Practice by tracing lineart until you get confident. Don't let your tablet gather dust ;_;
I hope that this tutorial helps you later when you start using a tablet though!

It's so true... at the beginning I just wanted to chuck the damn thing at the wall. I mean the demo I had, of course. It was super tiny and had this grey security device on the back, preventing it from being laid down on the table properly.
I really hope so to. I'm sure it will... I like that inking style.

There are some things that work differently (I actually dug out my copy of PSP to compare how it works with how PS works) but overall a lot of the concepts were pretty close. Just all of the windows are in different places -_-;;
Thanks! I hope it helps lots!

Wow, that is an awesome tutorial! You make all that stuff on the computer alone? That's awesome! ^w^ Man, that was one in-depth tut... that can be really helpful, especially how you went over the highlights and stuff.
Very awesome, you are quite talented, I must say. <3

Thanks so much! I actually forced myself to learn how to draw with a stylus because I went through too much paper, haha! Now I draw everything in....it gets easier the more you practise!
I am so glad that you liked my tutorial, I hope that it made sense, I'm kinda sleepy LOL!

Ryuura In reply to sushikitten [2006-05-29 03:08:40 +0000 UTC]
XD! Yeah, that could hinder things, running out of paper. It's kinda hard to draw with a stylus, but I guess you could get good at anything if you do it enough!
I did, it was one of the only tutorials that I could actually follow without getting lost, you made it very easy to understand.

I'm glad ^^
Man, my first attempts at stylus-drawing were laughable. I recommend beginning by scanning in a sketch and tracing it on a new layer. Do that a few bazillion times and you'll be able to ink freehand easily!
...at least, that's how I did it
