Tutorial by SUUZAN
Anime: FairyTail
Story / Characters by Hiro Mashima (真島ヒロ)
Character: Juvia Lockser

MATERIALS

1 Pink umbrella
Red Permanent Marker
3 yard of white lace trim
needle and Thread
White Thread
Sewing Machine
Cardboard and Scissors

UMBRELLA SHEET
1. Measure the circumference of your umbrella. twist or pull off the top of the umbrella pointer. more sturdy and expensive umbrellas will not let you do this easily. That’s why I suggest getting a cheaper umbrella from a dollar Store, like the “99 Cents Store”

2. Take off the Sheet from the metal wires of umbrella. Once the top is unsecured, it’ll be a lot easier to unhook the metal arms via soft tug. There should be around 6-8 hooks to remove from each metal arms. Be careful not to rip off hook!

3. Take the sheet off umbrella. I made a stencil with thin cardboard and scissors, so that I can trace it quickly and repeatedly. trace design on top of flat hard surface. Remove your stencil and fill in your design with permanent marker. I used a red sharpie. Let the inked design dry.
DO NOT SPRAY PAINT UMBRELLA because the waterproof surface will cause the spray paint to flake. I also think acrylic paints are too rigid and will flake/crumble.

LACE TRIM & THREAD
4. Buy white thread & trim/lace longer than the circumference of your umbrella. You can hand stitch the white lace with white thread. I used a “single stitch” sewing machine. I prefer an off-white color thread so that it blends better.

SEWING MACHINE & COMPLETION
5. Sew free edge of lace in place. Line the lace on top of edge of umbrella sheet. with overlap of half an inch (1.25cm), slowly sew the trim and umbrella sheet together around the circumference. Set the stitching to “loose” or “3-4 mm” so that when you stretch the umbrella sheet over the metal arms the lace won’t snap. Carefully insert metal arms ends into hook while umbrella is in closed position. put top back on. Open Umbrella!

ahhh, just saying your tutorial is amazingly awesome and I hope not to offend you but you could have painted it (would have been faster) with acrylic paint or fabric paint rather then marker it >_<" terribly sorry if i offended you

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

suuzan In reply to YoshiFHP [2013-03-10 03:15:47 +0000 UTC]

HEYO Kieild! Thanks for reading ^^ I'm not offended :0, in fact, I'm very thankful that you are helping me out!!! Which paint do you use to paint umbrellas and water proof materials? I did try painting first - sadly, the paints I used were flaking - maybe I had the wrong kind.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

YoshiFHP In reply to suuzan [2013-03-10 03:23:00 +0000 UTC]

Anytime!! And thank you so much for the watch!(: Well I've seen other people use fabric paint on umbrella's before! It wont flake or peel off over time. (I still own a fabric painted umbrella from 12 years ago and it still looks great!)
But I've used acrylic paint on t-shirts, the paint still looks good after machine washing and drying it!!:3

suuzan In reply to YoshiFHP [2013-03-10 03:51:04 +0000 UTC]

Acrylic is amazing! What kind of painted umbrella is it? Once thing I wanna confirm is the texture of certain paints. I used a marker because it comes out smooth. This is important to me because a smooth surface won't diffuse light. Doesn't acrylic leave small bumps on the surface? How did you paint it in a way that it won't do that??

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

YoshiFHP In reply to suuzan [2013-03-10 04:08:21 +0000 UTC]

Just a simple design was painted on it!(: But I'm not to sure on how my design didn't show brush lines. It may have to do with how much you apply, to much will leave lines when drying (I did leave it up word when drying rather than flat on the ground, I'm not sure if that does anything, gravity and all, but maybe?!).
That does makes perfect since to use marker so lines don't show!

suuzan In reply to YoshiFHP [2013-03-10 04:31:01 +0000 UTC]

Oh do you have picture of your umbrella??
I like to use paints for porous materials like craft foams and hard material like wood/plastics. It's difficult to color soft material like cloth or in this case an umbrella. I thought since you can DYE cloth, then a marker would be the next best thing. Since thin materials are more inclined to change shape with moisture, a fast drying permanent marker might leave less curling/streaks rather than paints that take a long time to dry~

YoshiFHP In reply to suuzan [2013-03-10 04:46:00 +0000 UTC]

Not of the umbrella, I'm sorry D:
Yes me too! I've been working with resin for a start and it's really fun!! yeah!! I've also seen people dye their wigs by using markers! It's really cool and I'm hoping sometime soon to try it out!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

suuzan In reply to YoshiFHP [2013-03-10 05:25:20 +0000 UTC]

Yeah! post a tutorial when you do! I wanna see you dying wigs !
Resin... what is that exactly? plastic?

YoshiFHP In reply to suuzan [2013-03-10 05:49:28 +0000 UTC]

Of cores! [link] <-It's the red thing. Yeah, but it's super soft, if you mess up the mold and it comes out funny you can cut it with scissors and fix it. But, it's strong so it wont brake! (it's a bad picture, of my 1st attempted) :3
