Description
A southbound Amtrak Cascades, with Talgo VIII equipment, zooms south past Titlow Beach Park in Tacoma, WA. The prominent duck-like cab car is leading. Just a week later, this train (or one like it) would begin signal testing on the Point Defiance Bypass, meant specifically to take passenger trains off this stretch of track, and particularly the single-tracked Nelson Bennett Tunnel a few miles north. The bypass through Lakewood was originally slated to open in 2017, but the first revenue train through derailed, resulting in three fatalities.
