So, I'm...completely in love with the part in the finale when Momo chitters and Mai looks at him along with everyone else? And my Mai-fanboy-ness makes me watch Mai in that part, thereby immediately...yeah. You get the idea.BUT THE WORLD NEEDS MORE MAI/MOMO BONDING!!!
So, this started with me drawing a pair of eyebrows in the classic "What the knockwurst?" pose...then adding Mai's eyes and face...and actually liking it....and then the hair blowing and a slightly forward neck. And then I decided to just not draw proper clothes on the girl and put her in a swimsuit. I decided to let the audience work the reasoning out for that. But then the problem came with deciding who to put behind her. I tried Zuko, but he turned out horrible...considered Appa, but chose to save him for another day...Sokka had the same thing...and then, well, I fell back on the lemur standby.
Momo is strange. When you start drawing him, you keep drawing him.
Once again...MS Paint for pretty much the whole thing. I can't do cute or beautiful, but by golly, when I do acceptable, I do it in the most primitive of digital manners possible!
Mai and Momo are copyright Mike and Bryan and Avatar: the Last Airbender.
Pic is mine. No stealy!

Well, Azula was more independent and self-sufficient. She never relied on her mom, she worked with her own abilities, and I guess Ursa just let that go while she tended to Zuko. Ozai probably took Azula under his wing and then utilized the power she held, making her into his own weapon and servant. She spent more time with Ozai, and thus, the parents took favorites; Zuko had more of a reliance on Ursa, and she always helped him. Azula didn't really need help--or at least, Ursa thought she didn't. Then the whole "monster" thing comes about, and, well, it's not like Ursa had any chances to apologize for whatever came out of her mouth in her anger. And Azula was thus stuck with this final image of her mom--panicked, afraid, and angry. She'd probably always viewed her mom as weak and afraid of Azula's power; Ursa's firebending probably came rarely, and she was normally a very graceful woman who didn't seem that impressive. At least, not in Azula's eyes--I imagine that she admired her father and his abilities, and he doubtlessly encouraged this attitude. Thus, when her mom finally had that "talk" with her, and the shock and anger spilled out--Azula was probably terrified.
She turned her back on Ursa, then, blaming her for everything bad and crediting her dad with everything good. She embraced power...and by those standards, Ursa could have no part.
Azula's a weapon. That's all she is in the end. She's Ozai's creation, the extension of his will. And once she cannot fight anymore, once she cannot inspire fear or come up with any plots or do anything to hurt Ozai's enemies, she breaks down. She's useless. Her mindset left her incapable of forming a relationship, acting like a normal teenager, being able to genuinely show and feel love without some sort of ulterior motive...and ultimately, when everything was stripped from her, she broke. She found herself unable to trust anyone, found herself alone...that illusion of life was gone. And when faced with herself...
I also think that a lot of it might have had to do with the fact that Ursa chose to leave her for Zuko. Zuko was weak in Azula's eyes; he was a failure, someone who would never catch up with her, never compare with her. Why would anyone love him or care about him? That's what she would have wondered--and when Ursa left Azula alone, turning her back on her family, to keep Zuko alive...it was the ultimate form of rejection. She chose Zuko over Azula. And that's also why Mai's betrayal came as such a shock to Azula--she never expected someone to choose Zuko over her, even after the first "mistake" with Ursa. Mai rejected Azula's power and perfection and chose to die in order to keep the imperfect failure, Zuko--who had left her alone and, as far as Azula knew, never even said goodbye--alive. And when Mai said "I love Zuko," Azula suddenly connected Mai and Ursa together. And exploded. She was cracking even before Mai mentioned fearing her--it was all the "love" bit. And then Ty Lee intervened to save Mai's life and what was left of the trio's friendship, and that was IT for Azula. Two people had ditched her for Zuko and her best friend had struck her down to protect one of those two. Azula was confused, then...
But the worst part came later.
"You...you can't talk to me this way! You can't treat me like Zuko!"
Ozai basically proved that he didn't love Azula as much as she thought--no doubt he'd yelled at her after the invasion, perhaps even struck her or shunned her somehow. She'd lied to him, after all, and everything she had done for him had pretty much disappeared. Zuko had betrayed them all, Iroh had escaped, the Avatar was alive, and Ba Sing Se and the rest of the Earth Kingdom cities were already slated for destruction despite her conquest. A puppet that cannot succeed is useless. Azula then managed to fail to capture her brother again--twice--and all she had to show for all of her hard work were her two best friends in chains, who had both deserted her and helped Zuko escape. She was a failure, and she couldn't take it.

And that is just taking words out of my mouth! I'm telling it's like everything I'm thinking, you're saying. That's good, right?
Anyways, all her problems start with Zuko. In a way, it's all his fault without him knowing. Everyone loves him more than Azula. She might suspect, but hearing the words or seeing the actions, just cuts her deeper than anything else. All she wants is love and affection from her family and friends. Yet, has none from anyone. Everyone starts choosing Zuko over her. She slowly starts heading into a state of depression, no doubt also another mental illness that I can't think of right now. Not bi-polar, but something else.
Anyways, she snaps once she sees Zuko back in her life. Possibly beforehand, but really losses it once he's back. She figures if he's back and she kills him, she'll have the love and affection from everyone once more.
And her mother? Seeing her mother in the mirror was what she wanted to hear. All those words of love and affection she longed for so long she imagined Ursa saying them, but it was too late. Azula already started to lose it. It's as you said, everyone chooses Zuko over her. Everything she worked so hard for, disappeared. Vanished in a blink of an eye. Everything she thought she had, thought she controlled, was nothing more than a weak excuse of her "power".
Ah, geez, now you have me wanting to write a little something about Azula and why she became the way she did. If I did, do you mind if I say about our conversation? Just that I got to thinking more about Azula?

ah, she is amazing. I loved what she said. I haven't read it all, but so far, it's amazing. Added her to my fav list. I love how she wrote about Azula in the finale. However, I want from her childhood, explaining the side of her that no one knows, really dive into her mind. And that, my dear Swan, is one thing I can do. I may not be able to write fluff, but I can write drama/angst/human emotions so well. I don't know what it is or how I do it, but I could make you hate Zuko, if so pleased. I think that's why I like writing death scenes so much. And that is what I want to write.

Oh, I already hate Zuko. I thought I made that perfectly clear above? That whole lightning bit makes me grumpy...and it's not just his fault, though, it's then that people are like "OMG, Zuko was so brave, taking that lightning bolt....but Aang was so stupid and stubborn and should have listened to everyone and sacrificed something blahblahblah..."
You know.
I view the whole lightning bolt as him having to patch up his mistake.
Him urging Aang to kill his father also lost him a lot of nobility points. There IS such a thing as too much rejection. I understand where he's coming from...but I'd think that he would have at least made an effort. At least he was willing to give Ozai a chance at the end there. And suggested it.
Apart from that, I'm fine with him, though, really.
He gets too much fandom woobification, though, too.

Yes, you hate Zuko already, that I know. But I could make someone else hate him. Someone who perhaps loves him...
See, I was torn about him actually killing Ozai. On the one hand, I've always seen Ozai as one who has to die. Just because of the person he is and everyone gets what they deserve.
But on the other hand, I'm so glad he wasn't. I got to see shirtless Ozai one more time!
Sorry, but I'm more of a Ozai/Hakoda fangirl than Zuko. Zuko, he's... ok, just too whinny. When he was evil, then yeah, liked him more. DJ thinks I'm crazy for liking Ozai more and killing Zuko all the time.
But whatever keeps me happy and drooling during the final, right?

Y'know, this reminds me of that Mai/Zuko picture I did a month ago, but never saw fit to colour it or put up the sketch. I think I'll do that when I get home.

There can never be enough Mai/Momo. Especially this kind.
"Momo is strange. When you start drawing him, you keep drawing him."
It's all in his plan: it's how he's going to take over the world.
