Description I finished version 2 of Rime's mock-up wings (V1 can be seen here: www.furaffinity.net/view/15408… ), and I really like how this one came out. It was based on this design (the one on the bottom): www.ornithopter.de/grafik/herz… but shaped as an albatross' wing. Here's an idea of how the full-size version will be, compared to my arm: www.dropbox.com/s/cisyy35mba1f…

This mock-up pivots, flaps and folds up pretty much exactly how I want it to, using elastic straps, pins, magnets, wire and dowel rods. The frame that attaches to the arm (via straps, not shown), can either bend fully while held above the wing, or bend down in front of it, when the wing is folded up (as seen in the bottom pic). It folds up almost completely that way as well. And there are two magnets and two semi-circular wires hidden under the feathers, so that the pivoting part of the wing can still stay attached to the rest of the wing (in any semi-folded position) while sliding back and forth along the wire.

I went ahead and painted all the feathers and markings just to give the maker ( thepinkpoudo.deviantart.com/ ) of the full-size wings an idea of how I would like them to look. The feathers will either be made of airbrushed, stiffened felt or craft foam, and the arm itself will be covered in a sleeve of airbrushed white fur. The pivoting part of the wing will be supported by a fishing rod or something similar that is flexible and lightweight, yet holds its curved shape, and I'll just move it manually, under the fur covering my wrist. Hope all that makes sense!

Have you thought of doing commissions on these?

I'm going to see how my own wings go first, and then I might consider it. But you can probably make your own based on these tutorials, and just modify them to be articulated.

Craft foam feathers, why couldn't I think of that? I've been brainstorming about form function and feathers for some critter wings, and I wasn't sure I'd get felt firm enough for the scale I'm working in, and plastic would be too rigid, but craft foam oughtta be just about right, I'll need to get some in the correct colors, but I can probably do a mock up with what i have.

Love the amount of thought and engineering you put into your projects.

Just make sure that you get foam thick enough to keep its shape, though of course you can add wire shafts on them to help with that. Pre-stiffened felt will also work, but it comes in a roll, so you'll have to figure out a way to get it to lay flat again (maybe iron it?). Anyway, glad to help!

Well luckily the wings aren't too big, I don't think even the longest feathers are even a foot long

She's going to be something between a plush, doll, puppet in the end.

I am indeed! Eventually I want to try casting some very large feathers in resin, But they would probably be too heavy to be feasible. Those would be used mostly as crests and decorative accents to suits, and I first started thinking about them in regards to the raptor suit I eventually want to build (although who knows if that suit itself will ever be feasible)

I suggest craft foam or stiffened felt over resin, because yeah, it would be very heavy! O_o If you only use it for a crest, then that might be ok.

Aww, thanks! <3 Did you see the commission I had made of her (and my hubby)? anisis.deviantart.com/art/Isla… If you can imagine her as a fursuit partial, that's what I'm aiming for!

The articulation looks fantastic!  I love the way the folded wing looks so realistic.
