Description
Here is what has been my latest obsession since the last update to Vega, stage 2 ProjectX. (made with fresh resources, the original ProjectX was not recycled)--------------------------------------------------
Download includes:
-Visual Style - any version of Windows Vista (32bit or 64bit)
-browseui.dll - requires 32bit Vista w/SP1
-and shell32.dll - requires 32bit Vista w/SP1
-Installation Instructions
After applying the Visual Style, set your color to "Graphite" and your color intensity control to about 5-10% (real low). The reason is even though the borders are made black, Vista still adds a very slight tint to the default color.

sweatyfish. I'm embarrased! I seem to be the only one here that wasn't able to get this to work. I am running Vista Home Basic x64 with SP1 and I've run your ProjectX VS before by patching the three dll's and placing the ProjectX VS folder in C:\Windows\Resources\Themes.
It always worked flawlessly.
However I reformatted recently and thought it was about time that I put some life into Home Basic x64. Just to be thorough, I thought I would download a fresh copy of ProjectX VS, figuring that you may have made some improvements.
When I got to your site on Deviant Art, I saw that you mentioned that ProjectX VS was now outdated and that you a new project out, ProjectX 2.
When I got to the ProjectX 2 page I saw that the download includes: "Visual Style - any version of Windows Vista (32bit or 64bit)", so I thought I was set. So I downloaded the .RAR file and opened it up and read your instructions, which confuses me, because in there you say "64 bit will come later"
But being stubborn I went ahead and tried to get it to work anyway. I did everything right and patched the two .dll files, then copied the theme folder to C:\Windows\Resources\Themes. Just for safe measure, I rebooted.
By the way, I did not use the VistaGlazz application because I figured that by manually talking ownership of the files and renaming them, that I would be doing the same thing. I hope I'm right about that thinking!
While booting back up though I got an error message and I wasn't even able to make it to the desktop. Just a black screen. Same goes for Safe mode.
So I has to use the repair option on the Vista DVD and go into System Restore and go back to before it all was installed. Then I rebooted and everything was fine.
Then I went back to your site and saw underneath your "Download includes" this link:
"x64 System Files by ~2bfree" and I thought, "hey dummy, that's it! You tried to patch the system files with x32 bit system files. These x64 bit system files are what you need.
So I downloaded them and went through the whole procedure again. Then after my reboot I did like you said and clicked Personalize\Windows Color and Appearance\Open classic appearance properties for more color options.
When the Appearance properties popped up though, I saw no mention of Windows Aero options, let alone any reference to ProjectX 2.
I even tried directly clicking on the ProjectX 2 ms style file and that did nothing. Then I even tried going through the Themes Option under Personalize. No good either.
Ok, so I am humbled now! What did I do wrong? And is this style for Vista Basic x64 or not? Obviously the system files I downloaded from 2bfree were x64 and they installed just fine. But is this not working because I run x64 Home Basic, which has no Aero?
I eagerly wait for your answer because I really, really wanted to have this installed. If it comes back that it just won't work, for one reason or another, that's fine, I can live with that. Or if I have to wait for a different version of Projectx 2, one that will work with my setup, that's fine also.
In the meantime, I'll just go back to using ProjectX VS, while I wait. By the way, did you ever make any modifications to that style? If I'm going to run it, I'd like to have the latest version.
Sorry about writing such a long report. I'm very detail-oriented, as you can tell!

I like the frames. Not liking the thin task bar or uber tiny minimize, maximize buttons. Doesn't meet the standards of Fitt's Law too well. But the frames I like. The menu highlight is not too pretty. The Favorite Links section is blah... too dark. Only thing I like is the frames really. Good effort though.

Hmm, I know what you are talking about. You are thinking of how some XP themes would have the smaller portion of the start menu on the right side. And only icons would be on the right side. I don't think this is possible with Vista (not right now at least).

Hello, I was looking a compact start menu called Royal Vista II Final in: [link] an I was thinkingn that if many Vista themes work in Seven it could be possible or I am wrong? I'm not programmer neither engineer or so but try to apply common sense and a bit of logical knowledge. Anyway, your work is really nice and you deserve the best. Kind regards and go on doing such good things.

Hello! Really nice, like better than WVHP original, there's only one bit of suggestion.I'm just a user. I would like Start Menu being even more compact. That's instead of names of items just put icons and a tooltip for each of them; and at the bottom instead of three icons: Suspend, Block and Arrow (Close, Restart, Close Session, etc... Block) you could take off Block Button since it appears again in Arrow Icon, there you can gain more space. Hope I've been clear enough I'm not English writer, I'm from Argentina and Spanish is my mother tonge. Thanks for this piece of art. Regards.

The only help I can give is if you look in the left pane here: [link]
Or you may be able to understand Vathanx's better here: [link]
By following the instructions, you should be able to get them to work. They are well explained and can't really provide any more help than that.

i had the same problem with the dll's...
i used the "take ownership"-thing and shut off the UAC but still it didnt work...
so i tried it this way (it even worked with the UAC turned on):
1. right-click the dll and click on "PROPERTIES". then click "SAFETY" (i dunno if its called this because i use a german version of vista) at the top - you should see a list with the different users of the computer and below a list where the permissions for the users of the computer are listed. click on "extended" (?) situated below the second list.
2. in the new window click on "PERMISSIONS" at the top and again you see a list. on my computer i have seen that the ADMINSTRATOR only had the permissions to read and execute. so i clicked EDIT which is situated below the list.
3. a new window appears. it nearly looks the same as the prior window. click on ADMINSTRATOR in the list of this window and then on EDIT below the list.
4. in the new window set an hook to permit full access.
5. click ok then apply....
you should be able now the rename the file.
to this with both of the dll's...
- i assume no liability for damages - use this at your own risk!!!!!

followed your instructions to the word, installed vistaglazz. I placed the project x2 folder in themes directory, I'm stuck. when I select "open classic appearance properties for more color options" there is nothing having to with any windows aero options. It only gives me a list of color schemes to select from none of which are project x2
any help would be appreciated also this is my first attempt at modding vista im a noob so please dont flame me too bad. thanks

sweatyfish In reply to WarmMachine03 [2008-09-27 01:19:37 +0000 UTC]
The classic appearance properties window doesn't have color options, it should show multiple entries of "Windows Aero" and it should be one of those.

imbasic In reply to WarmMachine03 [2008-09-26 22:30:29 +0000 UTC]
If you did it right one of those color schemes is ProjectX 2. Just click on one of the color schemes named Windows Aero, hopefully you have more than one Windows Aero scheme, and click apply.
Vista for some reason will not name new visual styles anything other than Windows Aero or Windows Vista Basic. There is a fix for this somewhere on the web but I am to lazy to apply it to my PC.
Hope that Helps.

ehh. i havent read all the comments, so dont know if someone suggested this earlier.. but would it be possible for you to release a shell32.dll with the shell style on the top...
dont know if this is the technical term or not.. but heres an example : [link]
you can see in the explorer windows how all the extra info is on the top, instead of the bottom of each window.
i love your theme. im just accustomed to using topshell style...
so is this possible?

sweatyfish In reply to kalemus [2008-09-27 01:24:29 +0000 UTC]
It seems that you didn't replace the .dll files correctly. This can happen if you didn't turn off User Account Control. If you can, use an Ubuntu live CD (or the other operating system if you dual boot), look into the drive with Vista installed, and fix the problem by making sure you have both system files correctly named.
