Description
EDIT - This tutorial doesn't work anymore with Eclipse, since I made this in 2011. Sorry I'm inactive on dA and not sure how thumbnails work now.EDIT - This tutorial is a little outdated since it was created before the "Share buttons" existed, but it still works. I'll update it with newer images when I have time.
.
To find thumb codes now:
1. Go to deviation
2. Find the "Share buttons" to the right that have a Note, Facebook, Tumblr, & Twitter, then click the down arrow
3. Copy the code under "Thumb"
I made this mostly for the directions in :thumb174033030: Ooo look, another thumbnail! Let me know if you have any questions!

Where are you trying to paste the thumb code?

Well, I was trying to post another deviantartist's creation, a color palette, into the description of my art, and it just refused to work.
After a bit of digging, I think the reason it doesn't work for me is because I'm a free member on this site, and I don't have any of the membership privileges.

Yeah that was going to be my next suggestion as well. Those are usually the most common problems, trying to post thumbs in the wrong area or being restricted as a free member. Glad you figured it out, hopefully you can find another solution. c:

Would you be able to help me by chance?
I'm trying to add bullets to the description in this image:
The first 6 are showing up, and then suddenly they stop working and instead display the thumb code. I've tried completely deleting the description and re-doing it in St.ash (it works there!), I'm out of ideas...
Thanks for your help, if you're able to take the time to help me!

Hi there! That's a great question. dA only lets everyone use 6 or less thumb codes in the deviation description. That's why the first 6 show and the rest don't. Imagine if there was no limit and people spammed their descriptions with a bazillion images lol. That's why when you see artists feature their other works or commissions in the description, there's always 6 or less thumbnails. If you want to use more bullets, I'd recommend using the ones dA has on their emoji list, or maybe finding bullets that are plz accounts (but those would be bigger 50x50px). Hope that helps!

Hahaha, WOW! I never would have figured that out, and I would have tried to fix this for AGES!
Thank you so much!

Thank you so much, this really helped!
I was wondering, could you please do a tutorial on using journal skins? It's really confusing

SweetDuke In reply to Inkkmoon [2017-01-10 02:38:27 +0000 UTC]
I'm glad it was helpful! I agree, they're SUPER confusing and TBH I don't feel like I'm competent enough to make a tutorial of my own. Mostly I just read people's directions really carefully, look up other tutorials, and figure some things out on my own when possible haha. And I'd suggest sticking to journal skins instead of trying more complicated CSS because that's super confusing. Here's a basic tutorial about what they are and how to use them (you just have to be careful to read the creator's comments and copy/paste any "div codes" they include, otherwise the journal might not work). I hope this helps?!?! :3
How to Use Journal Skins What are journal skins?
Journal skins are premade, installable layouts that allow you to customize the look and feel of your journal.
Here are a few examples:
Who can use journal skins?
Only premium members on deviantART can use journal skins.
If you're unsure about whether or not you're a premium member, just go to your profile page and look at the top. If it says "Need Premium Membership", you're not a premium member. How do I use journal skins?
Find a skin that you like. You can browse for one here, the Installable Journal Skins category.
Pick a skin that you like.
Before you install the skin, scroll down and read the comments. Many journal skins will require you to copy

Great question, I'm not very familiar with the app...I just toyed with it and couldn't find a way that seems easy. :C I honestly don't use the app much since I think it limits a lot of features, and I usually end up using the mobile website (or sometimes full website) on my phone instead. Sorry I wasn't much help! D:

Wait, how can I get to Status?
Do I have to be a core member?
👍: 0 ⏩: 2
SweetDuke In reply to azzpens [2017-01-10 03:25:58 +0000 UTC]
Yeah you can put them in your deviant ID, and since you're a core member now you can use them in other places too. Just use the thumb code and you're set. :3

no—
that's a custom box, a thing for core members, but if you want, you can put it in your deviantid.

SweetDuke In reply to Ewarriorcat [2017-01-10 03:46:00 +0000 UTC]
Sorry my reply is so late lol but did you find a solution to your problem? It depends where you want to put the banner. Is it in a journal? Custom box? There are different codes that work in different places, so a thumbnail may or may not work where you decide to put your banner.

Anyone knows if, once core membership is finished, thumbs can be usable?
In other words: 1 month core = 1 month with usable thumb codes?
