Description
I've actually wanted to do a tutorial for a while, so I'm happy that I was able to throw a fairly decent one out there [hopefully].The tutorial is not that complicated since I explained most of the basic stuff, so I'd say that this tut is probably best suited for beginning PS users.
I hope it's understandable. There are many many many more helpful tutorials on dA (go look in my favorites, ufufufu), but hopefully this is an okay basic one. ^^
And like I said, if you have any questions at all, be sure to let me know, I'll be happy to answer. 8) And if you have any PS tips/suggestions for me, I'd love to hear them!
Now time for sleep, oi.

I use Paint Tool SAI first for a lineart, then export it to PNG so the bg is not white and I am able to use layers without putting the multiply in the layer. Then I start coloring (of course I have like 12 or more layers for a picture) but I did learn something new here! to multiply the layer and use the Gausian blur *w* I didn't think of that, thanks for this it will help in future drawings!

when you get a tablet, does a program come with it or do you have to download it?

You have to download or buy a program. (: Programs like GIMP are free to download! Programs like Photoshop are very expensive haha. Whatever works for you. :3

is there one that you can illustrate on and animate?

SweetDuke In reply to Hatoyahoshi [2013-06-26 18:39:15 +0000 UTC]
Hmm I'm not sure honestly. D: Maybe if you look around you can find something. I think some people use free programs like GIMP to illustrate, then use free online programs to animate. I used to use one but I forgot the name, I think it started with a Z. This post has some answers that make help you: [link] :)

Very helpful advice, suggesting multiply instead of getting rid of the white negative space of the line art. Never thought of that before. I'll have to give it a try. Great tutorial!

I'm trying to color a drawing without a tablet, and when I use the Magic Brush it only selects part of the section I need. (Like, for example, if I try to select a chunk of hair, it'll select it, but it leaves some extra edges of the chunk not selected.) If I try to select the rest of it, it end up selecting a bunch of other crap that I don't want. Any help?

SweetDuke In reply to lotsofmoxy [2010-06-24 01:19:53 +0000 UTC]
Okay let me see if I'm understanding you correctly...when you use select a section, does it leave a small unselected area around the whole thing and in small areas like corners?

SweetDuke In reply to lotsofmoxy [2010-06-24 01:31:55 +0000 UTC]
Mkay, first make sure the "Tolerance" of the Magic Wand tool is set right. Like if you're selecting a white spot between black lines, you can have the Tolerance high like 50 or 100.
Once you think the tolerance is okay, select the area you want, then go to Select>Modify>Expand and make the selection expand 1 or 2 pixels (depending on how thick your lines are, you may have to expand even farther than that).
If you're trying to get corners, then I'd suggest filling the selection with the color you want, then just touching up the corners manually with the brush tool.
Hopefully that helps! D: Let me know if that doesn't solve your problem. ^^

How do u blend some of the olors so it looks like one color fades into another, u no, like the white and black scale where there's gray in the middle and the gray slowly fades into black or white?

SweetDuke In reply to Darrison [2009-12-27 22:13:55 +0000 UTC]
That's called a gradient. I'm not sure what program you use, but usually they have a Gradient Tool that does it for you. Try looking up gradient tutorials on dA and that might help. ^^

It's called gradient, all you do is make a fill layer(I think..).

Lovey tutorial, Duky ^^ I actually always use the same manner to colour my drawings, though I don't really like how my lineart looks then. But now I use another program to make my lineart by paths etc. and then I open it in PS
PS> You can select all the white parts of the lineart, then Shift+I (or Ctrl+Shift+I, dunno actually coz I can't test it on my new notebook), make black your bg color and then fill in the lineart by pressing Ctrl+Delete. You can also blur the lineart a bit, but usually your lineart looks better and darker when you've followed these steps.

Awesome! Yeah I usually use the pen tool in PS to make paths and stuff, but this was the first time I did the lineart on paper and knew how to color it properly in PS. ;D I actually like it better, because it's faster for me than trying to make all those paths.
Oh wow, thanks for that tip! I tried it and it worked well. :3 The only thing I notice is that the lineart gets more pixelly/grainy that way, but I work with my art really zoomed-in so I'm sure it wouldn't show much when I'm finished and zoomed-out. Thanks!
