Description I'm on a poodle kick right now. It's Jazzie and Candie's fault, I swear.

I plan to upload more poodle art in the near future as designing and styling their hair is proving to be much addictive fun. But first, meet George, the third of my poodle characters that I had planned for the comic (yes, I think it'll be that). He grew out of a suggestion made by the lovely ~karja , and has been undergoing some developments lately. I'm quite pleased with his final design.

George is, simply put, a jock. Poodles, as some of you non-dogfreaks may not know, were originally bred to be water retrievers - the furstyles that they sport in the show rings today have a part to play in this, in protecting the vital organs and muscles against the cold without waterlogging the dog. They remain very active, versatile dogs (which is why it still strikes me as highly ironic that it was placed in the non-Sporting Group). George loves outdoor sports and greatly enjoys showing up other dogs in hunting and tracking competitions. Energetic and fiercely competitive, he always gives of his best, which has led him to several field champion titles, much to the chagrin of a good many pointer and retriever. He enjoys challenges and is willing to take on just about anything. George met the poodle sisters we all know and love at a poodle fanciers' rally, and they have remained friends since, tho' Georgie-boy harbours a particular soft spot for Jazzie, probably because of her being the more spirited of the two. Hmm..

He's a character in my story. Not a RP character.

The terrifying thing about this guy is, he reminds me of a friend of mine from way back at school. The thing about this George is, he actually wins.

Fantastic idea. I do like him a lot. My only suggestion would have been to have him as a brown/russet colour, more because of the mud factor. But while works like a streak of lightning Uber work. Kudos.

Wow, that's interesting o.O What do you mean by 'he wins', though? *is not too clear*

Thanks! Heh, actually the white colour was a deliberate choice, to make more of a stark contrast to his lifestyle and personality. Normally when people think of white poodles they think of some prissy thing with a pink ribbon that yaps a lot and gets carried everywhere, y'know? But thanks for the input anyways hun

He wins as in, how competitive your George is. He achieves his goals where as my George never quite makes it.
Sahree, should have been clearer on that
Beautiful work.

Beautiful. ^_^ OF course, even though they are in the non-sporting group, I've known of quite a few judges who DO judge by the trim of the coat as well as the body. The poodle should reflect it's heritage. Have you read Jingle Bell Bark? ^_^ It's an adorable book including poodles, there's another that goes with it in the series. It teaches a lot about them too. LOL Now I want a poodle. x_X;

Thanks Either! Yes, I'd imagine they would, seeing as the grooming is as important a part of the show dog circuit as actual conformation. And no, I don't believe I have read that book, though it does sound cute I'll have to look out for it! I agree, poodles have a habit of growing on you o.O

Ahh! Another poodle! I bounce in joy XD Once again...great job capturing the breed, especially in the muzzle. And that floofy tail!! My neighbor's standard had a floofy tail and that exact hair style. I love how you did the fur too...I've always wanted to draw a poodle, but never knew how to go about the curly fur.

swift-whippet In reply to Original-Wolfhusky [2005-11-04 22:33:02 +0000 UTC]

Thank youu! :3 Heh, you're about to see quite a few more. Drawing them grew on me.. they're just such fun to style, personality- and accessory-wise, because of all the hair they have and their distinctive appearance. They're like... My Little Puppys o.O Yes, the fur bore thinking about I agree because I'm used to shorthaired dogs especially.. I try to vary it a bit according to character - Jazzie's floof looks more wavy and Candie's is poofy, while Georgie Porgie is just plain scruffy ^-^

Yay! More Poodles! Lmao I cracked up with the My Little Puppies. It's very true, though! I'm the exact opposite with fur..I'm so used to poof that smooth coats confuse me lol. Can't wait for more!

Oh la la, c'est tres bien...

He looks so French, so there's a bit of it for you. I'd put the whole comment in French but I don't know if you speak it.

Anyway. Like I said, he looks very French. I like the grey-ish khaki colour you set the white off with, and he does look very mannish and definately poodle-y. Which is a good thing.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

swift-whippet In reply to NeelaCat [2005-11-04 03:24:24 +0000 UTC]

Haha, nope I wouldn't have.. though I'd probably have gotten my French-speaking friend to translate for me.

And that's interesting, I hadn't intended to make him look French but it's a happy coincidence that he does! Poodles being the national dogs of France and all. I'm glad his masculinity came through all right, I'm notorious for making charcaters look feminine. Thank you muchly.

awwwwww the classic puppy cut, thank god you don't draw any of your dogs like a chow chow or something with the ever so hated puppy cut, if you did i would have to beat you with a dead fish

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

swift-whippet In reply to Streaky [2005-11-04 01:41:14 +0000 UTC]

Apologies, now that I re-read what I wrote it sounds quite snappish, and I'm sorry. Anyways, I plan to draw my dogs in whatever suits them as characters, so I'm willing to brave your dead fish for that

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

swift-whippet In reply to Streaky [2005-11-04 01:32:39 +0000 UTC]

Actua;;y, it's not the puppy cut. It's the sporting clip: [link] one of the four clips allowed in the show ring. Something like the puppy cut but not quite.

And I'd thank you to treat me like a fellow dog fancier, my friend, and not someone who doesn't know jack about canines.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Streaky In reply to swift-whippet [2005-11-04 01:41:42 +0000 UTC]

wtf? i wasn't saying anything bad o.o, i was just saying that i'm glad you don't draw your dogs with the lion cut because that to me is horrible treatment and quite ugly.

It's okay, sorry for the misunderstanding . I just really REALLY hate the lion cut and i think all pet owners who have that done to there animal should be shot on site Lolol.

I love the way you make a poodle look so sporty. Fabulous job- I love his bandana. He doesn't have a show clip I see!
The sketch of him with his tongue out is so sassy.

And yay... someone knows about the poodles history- Poodles originated in Germany and their name- Pudel meant "puddle." Hence a water dog bred to swim and retrieve ducks and water fowl. Their funny hair clip didn't weigh the dog down as it paddled across the water after game, and the curly hair remaining after the clip covered vital areas- eg: chest, caprus (wrist), hip joints, etc...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

swift-whippet In reply to GoGoGiddy [2005-11-04 01:04:39 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! He was originally Continental'd like the other two, as I figured it'd be more traditional, more of a challenge for me (I enjoy challenging myself artistically), and more of a slap in the face for the cocky dogs. But at the last minute I decided to save his dignity and give him a sporting clip (which I didn't find out about until the last minute because most of the poodle clip info sites only listed the main three clips ). It would really be more applicable anyways

Thanks for typing all of that out too, now I won't have to! heh. Watching Breed All About It avidly pays off in the end.

Thanks, *gets warm fuzzies* I'm a dog obsessor. (5 years of Junior Handling for Agility.)
And my friend's mother has a chocolate mini poodle- I had lots of practice clipping the little dog (sporting clip).
