Description newest character on Mushroom Grove , my "bully" whippet Golddust. it's a fascinating phenomenon -> [link] although I feel bad for the dogs. the last thing they need is some idiot that decides they look cool and starts breeding them on purpose. :\

History:
Golddust was born much to his breeders' dismay and chagrin. Both his parents were extremely fast dogs on the whippet racing circuit, and they had had high hopes for the litter that would result from the union of such a pair. As they grew older, four of the five puppies looked perfectly healthy and normal, but Golddust was hardly recognisable as a whippet. His muscles bulged from his sides, giving him the look of some strange hybrid dog on steroids, and to top it all off, he wasn't even particularly fast, his heavy cramp-prone muscle putting him at a disadvantage to his sleek, swift brothers and sisters. Feeling him to be useless, his breeder promptly disposed of him at a local animal shelter.

The as-yet-unnamed puppy was spotted by a young man who took him to be some kind of pit bull cross. Imagining the dog to be his ticket into the fighting rings, the youth hurried the whippet pup home and began his 'training', taunting him, trying to get him to snap. The dog, puzzled and alarmed by this, usually sought refuge by slinking away with his ears flat, only resorting to unwilling bared teeth and bites when he was backed into a corner, terrified. Annoyed at the lack of response from what he had thought was a fighting dog, the youth often took his frustrations out on the dog himself.

Finally, desperate, the man decided to take the dog to the ring anyway, thinking that perhaps other dogs would be the key to unlocking the ferocity that he still felt sure was somewhere in that deep muscled chest. It might have gone very ill with the dog if the fighting ring had not been swarmed upon by police that very night he was scheduled for his first fight, the dog fighters caught and the dogs taken away.

At this point in time the young dog was about a year and a few months of age, and when his new foster owner first saw him he was cringing and shivering in his crate, obviously traumatised. The dog was quickly rushed to a vet to be treated for any physical injuries, and over the next half a year he was worked with to overcome the mental and emotional scars that had been inflicted upon him by his uncaring dogfighter master. It was also during this time that it was discovered he was in fact a double-muscled whippet, and not any kind of mastiff or bull dog.

The dog was named Golddust, for the golden brindled spotting that decorated his white coat, and he was eventually adopted by a young whippet handler named Johnny had just moved to Mushroom Grove. Underneath the muscle and bulk, Golddust was still a whippet at heart, and he responded eagerly to Johnny. The two remain together to this day, and Golddust has even found good friends in the two whippets owned by Johnny's good friend, Beth.

yeah, I know. it's an interesting phenomenon, and the science geek part of my brain is fascinated, but I feel terrible for the dogs. at least they are being given homes and a good life.

aww I love Golddust especially the markings, thats so cool that you thought of rping a bully whippet, not very many people really understand what a bully whippet is so you might end up explaining it over and over LOL

im so glad that so far nobody has tried to breed bullies, might have happened once or twice but I'm sooo glad it's not a trend. if this happened to Pitbulls, it would probably be a trend that would spread like a wildfire. but people do race them, which in my opinion is wrong. you never know if you could be severely over working their hearts, and they probably do have a great deal of cramping.

the mutation fascinates me as much as it makes me feel for the dogs, and I wanted to try drawing one, so all that inspired me to create Dusty. my forum is full of intelligent people though, thankfully, so I don't think I'll have to explain too many times.

oh gosh that is all they need, isn't it, some idiot deliberately breeding them? all that muscle can't be good for their hearts and their skeletons. :\ I didn't know people raced them, and I don't like the idea of that either. I'd heard that they suffered from cramps. and I wouldn't put it past some idiot dogfighting person to try to get one to fight. :\

Wow, that's interesting... I'm sending that article to my mom and aunt, they're both hardcore dog lovers. I'd never heard of such a thing! But yeah, it really can't be good for them, and more than likely someone will want to end up breeding them. :\

Golddust is adorable! Poor guy, I hate dogfighting

I am intrigued by the mutation myself, which is why I wanted to make a character of one. but at the same time, I really do feel for the dogs. :\ apparently the gene mutation shows up in cattle and greyhounds as well.

me too. :\

swift-whippet In reply to RJ8 [2007-11-17 18:49:08 +0000 UTC]

they're not pit bulls, they're whippets. pure whippets, but because of a genetic mutation it causes them to bulk up on muscle abnormally. I hope they manage to breed away from such accidents happening. it's not good for the breed or the dogs themselves. :\

Good point. When I first saw this picture I was like... is that a pitibull mix?

I've read about other genetic problems with dogs, but nothing like this.

Wow what a sad past. I love the detail you put into it and it makes for a very interesting and original character. I love the idea of him finding Johnny and how his life started to become better after that <3 It's so cool how I can see the whippet part of him but at the same time he still looks rough, just like the "fighting" type of dog that the man wanted him to be. Great job with that part I especially love how you drew his shoulders and his chest, the defintion makes him look tough and strong. The fact that he looks so muscular looks very uncomfortable. poor guy :'o

You do alot of Mushroom Grove related art and I've always been wondering what exactly the site is? Is it like a roleplay site? You make it sound like being a member of such a place would be enjoyable and I've been looking for a good place for canine rp

Why must people so cruel as to make dogs fight each other? TT.TT I hate people who breed dogs to become fighters and such. Dogs are supposed to be man's companion, not a killing or figthing machine o.o

aw, thank you Annie. <3 yes I am fascinated by the mutation and wanted to draw a DM whippet, which is what inspired me in part to create Dusty, but at the same time I feel deeply for the dogs and I really hope breeders can stop bullies from appearing. it just seems like it would be so uncomfortable and not fun at all to have all that bulk on a skinny little whippet frame. :\

and yes, Mushroom Grove is a roleplay site for domestic cats and dogs. I am a co-owner of the site, after all, so it's possible I'm a little biased, but I can't promote the place enough. it's a wonderful community with friendly people and roleplayers of all levels are welcome, though we have certain standards for RP posts that I don't think are completely unreasonable. the setting is not too complicated, either. I would be so excited if you joined!! we totally have to RP sometime if you do. but feel free to come visit, create an account and look around first. -> [link]

search me. dog fighters and backyard breeders need to be cast into an alternative dimension.

although I have to admit, the sighthounds at least WERE originally bred to be killing machines, and some breeds are still used for hunting and such. I have no problems with hunting as pest control, or for food. but taking two animals and MAKING them fight each other? uh-uh. :\

I'm one of those people that like making everything very skinny XD When I drew my Saluki I was all like "wow this breed works well with my style" x3 they're so small frame-wise so I have no trouble with them 8D I've tried to draw those big dogs like huskies and such before but those dont work out with me at all. Somehow I can no draw fluff well xD

But hey no complaining here x3 I like skinniness XD

I'm afraid not, but you don't have to include the weight in your profile anyway. Some RP boards do that, but not us.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Anniepopokios In reply to swift-whippet [2007-11-18 01:11:27 +0000 UTC]

oh okay xD Yesh most rp sites I've been on require weight. Hmm I've almost got my profile done but I'm stumped cus my character is so average XD I guess she'll just have to progress and become someone more "unique" as she begins to rp. I'm really exicted about this 8D I need to post her picture XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

swift-whippet In reply to Anniepopokios [2007-11-18 01:15:41 +0000 UTC]

Oh of course, 'average' doesn't matter because characters often come into their own when you start having them interact with other people's. most of my own characters are pretty 'average'. I find that the beauty of MG is that the setting and plot are so simple that it really allows personal plotlines and such to take off.

I'm really excited too! can't wait to see her!

swift-whippet In reply to amaguard [2007-11-17 18:25:31 +0000 UTC]

I just want the bullies to disappear. as sweet as I am sure the dogs are - because whippets ARE sweet, and these guys ARE whippets - it can't be good for them to be that way and I hope nobody starts breeding them. it's not just their lungs and heart, they still have the skinny light whippet skeleton underneath all of that. one would have to breed them with a heavier dog. and what would the point of that be?

thanks so much, though.

amaguard In reply to swift-whippet [2007-11-17 19:17:01 +0000 UTC]

Yeah that's quite true. I find them a bit scary looking too..kinda like a poor whippet on steroids D: And I bet as that one lives longer it'll develop more problems, most likely. You're right, disappearing is probably the best for them.

No problem

Great job on the picture. He must've been difficult, but you pulled it off well. I want to try to draw him for the challange of making a muscular dog look like he does have an underlying slender frame.

I'm glad Whippet breeders are trying to prevent bullies by looking into genetic testing. With their cram-prone muscles it's got to be a hard life for the poor things.

thanks <3 yeah, I think that's partly why I wanted to have a character of one, too. I did have to use references a lot, but I guess it's good that I'm comfortable enough with the whippet structure to be able to try a different take on it.

and yes, I'm sure bullies are as lovely as any other whippet temperament-wise, but they need to disappear. it can't be good for them. I feel bad for them.

it's hard on their bodies period, I imagine, because they still have that skinny whippet frame and skeleton under all that muscle.
I don't know if anyone has actually mistaken them for some kind of bull dog and tried to fight them, but I wouldn't doubt it could happen. people can be really stupid. particularly dogfighting people. >(

compare bulldog [link] with whippet [link] :3 they both have that 'rose' ear that shows the burr on the inside and can fold back against the neck. for sighthounds it's so they can fold them flat and thus help with aerodynamics when they run. :3
