Description go me, I joined another dog RP - Slime Mold. that was a few months ago, actually, but I hope to get more integrated there. :3 thus far, it's been interesting being in a new place with new people, and if anyone has any others to recommend I'd be glad to check them out. (must have dogs, though, and preferably no wolves - nothing against wolves as animals, they just always seem to attract the crazed illiterate fangirl types.) though MG will always be my home as far as domestic-animal RP is concerned. heh. it was only after I started checking out other semirealistic canine RP sites by myself that I realised how much the Grove has spoilt me. ; P

meet Soliloquy. she's my first real IG character, and she's so much fun to play for so many reasons. :3 with each of my RP characters I try to fill a hole, characterisation-wise, that my existing characters haven't already. and I didn't have any characters that were touched in the head so... yes.

(and her family was a joy to name. S is my favourite letter, too.)

----

Born to Somnolent and Sanguine, two Italian Greyhounds belonging to a logophilic book-collector with a penchant for the letter ‘S’, the litter of seven was enthusiastically named Schist, Sibilant, Syzygy, Sarsenet, Soliloquy, Stringendo and Smidgen. They might have lived in a hovel out in the desert, but there was always something to eat – mostly fleshy cacti and small rodents that the dogs hunted down and the man duly roasted – and the home was a happy one. The man enjoyed reading aloud, and for lack of any other company he passed many a pleasant evening reading to his little hounds from his collection of salvaged books. Yellowed and tattered they might have been, but one could have sworn the dogs were listening intently to every word. They certainly treated the books with respect.

One cold evening, when the litter was about a year old, a large retriever-type female appeared on their threshold. She seemed an amiable sort and was made welcome by all. But later that night, the true nature of the stranger was made clear as she swiftly and silently tore out the throats of first Somnolent and Sanguine, and then their offspring. Soliloquy, a relatively light sleeper, awoke to the odour of blood and the bodies of her kin strewn about her, with the stranger finishing off another with cruel efficiency. As the larger dog turned on her, Soliloquy fled the scene with a choked sob of fear and pain. She might have escaped unscathed in body, but not in mind.

Since then Soliloquy has wandered alone and without a purpose, her hound’s mind and senses nonetheless helping her survive the new environment as she hunts and scavenges and hides. She was left quite unhurt but just a little distracted. She has not run with a pack since then, and perhaps in her own head she has formed her own. No matter what she is doing, she keeps up a running, mumbled commentary on her own thoughts. She refers to herself as ‘we’ and ‘us’, playing with words and syllables as if they were toys, and at times appears to actually converse with herself or members of her defunct family. Solly is good-natured but fearful and suspicious of strangers, particularly large gundog breeds. When awake, she is constantly in motion, pacing, sniffing, looking up and down and every which way, and this behaviour intensifies when she is anxious or distressed. She always chooses flight over fighting, and has long perfected the art of seamless disappearing from a threatening situation. When she is feeling more at ease and relaxed she may be playful and friendly with other dogs and even humans, but she shies away from too much touching, and her lilting, verbalised stream of consciousness often confuses and repels other dogs. But for all her oddness and introversion, Solly has a sweet and tender heart, and it pains her to see anyone hurt or in trouble, barring only animals that trigger her prey instinct – and even then, only when they actually do.

Dog RPs are fairly commonplace. The one that I had Soliloquy here on shut down and I have yet to find a place to put her, but I do have another site that I co-own with a couple of friends. [link] It's a dog/cat/human RP.

It'd be nice if you could give me some feedback on the art/story/character. After all, that's what comments are for!

A Very beautiful sighthound Soliloquy is! She stands out nicely against the dark background. I love how you developed her as a character, giving her characteristics, and her sad/somewhat morbid history. I take it that she doesn't like gundog breeds due to the event that happened to her family? or is that just a characteristic of hers?

well, a retriever-type slaughtered her entire family. you do the math.

thanks! I'm glad you like her, I intend to do much more development in future with her because charcaters always evolve when you RP them ^^

I like the dark outline of her eye. She looks kinda creepy that way. Yay for new disturbed characters! I would be that way too if I saw my litter mates all murdered. o___o Bullet would have totally owned that retriever though. He's 20 pounds of FAST. And he's so slick even if you could catch him you couldn't hold on. He runs bigger (and smaller) dogs in circles lol. Are you going to do a picture of the evil retriever doggie? That would be cool. I may want to do some fan arts of her. She sounds like a psycho serial killer dog.

wow, I didn't even notice I was doing that! o.o and yes disturbed characters make things interesting.

I want to see Bullet owning doggies now. that is funny.

I have sort of done a picture of evil retriever doggie! but she is at home so I can't upload her. I'm introducing her in december when I am back haha. and yes she is a psycho serial killer dog. she has half her face ripped off. o.o

Evil dog with missing face SWEEEET. XD Um yea Bullet owned a black lab one time. I was waiting outside Phil's apartment with Lady and Bullet when this giant, fat black lab comes around the corner. He sees the dogs and runs up to us snarling. (this all happens rly fast x_x) Then just before he takes a bite out of Bullet, Bullet rears onto his hind legs, grabs the lab's cheeks with his front paws and chomps down on his face. The lab squealed and ran for his life. Then this kid on a bike comes riding by and yells at the the lab "LUCKY COME HERE!" Yea, lucky *my* dog was on a leash. AHAHAHAHAAAA!!! o__o Sorry, I felt like bragging. That was the coolest thing Bullet's ever done.

swift-whippet In reply to Queen-of-Greyhounds [2007-09-28 05:23:00 +0000 UTC]

that is excellent. especially since this friend of my dad's who owns a rott and a lab keeps making fun of Bella and calling her a wimp. o.x he asked my mum once why we didn't have a lab lawls. in yo' face!

on a sidenote, that sounds like dog-agressiveness to me. how awful for the lab. the average american lab seems to be fat, annoying and stupid.

Queen-of-Greyhounds In reply to swift-whippet [2007-09-28 19:31:18 +0000 UTC]

I agree, that was lab was very dog aggressive. I could tell he wasn't going after me, he was after Lady and Bullet. Lady just stood there and wagged her tail. She thinks the entire world is her friend. x__x Labs have it bad. They are sooo over bred here. They overcrowd the pounds like crazy. The best labs are the ones from good hunting lines. And I mean GOOD hunting lines from reputable breeders. There are lots of hunters who breed labs, but most of those pups are too dumb to hunt so the hunters just sell them to uneducated families. Then all those labs end up in the pound. That's why there are so many here in the Midwest. I don't know why city people would breed labs. I suppose just because of their rep as family dogs? *shrug*

swift-whippet In reply to Queen-of-Greyhounds [2007-09-28 21:58:11 +0000 UTC]

they do have a big rep as family dogs. they're statistically the most popular dog in America, which would account for the overbreeding. everyone wants a lab, and of course there are wicked people who take advantage of this. *snort*

(OMG I WANT TO GO HERE. *flail* [link] )

Oohh gorgeous Swift. She seems fun to RP! I love her backstory..so very creative! I'm thinking about RPing, is MG a good place to RP? And I've never RPed before, so...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

swift-whippet In reply to akokolupe [2007-09-28 02:14:56 +0000 UTC]

thank you, Akoko, for the kind words! and yes she is very much fun to play.

as long as you can write and characterise, you can RP. it's like social interaction in a way. developing your own characters by having them interact with other people's is such an experience - you'll find out things about your characters you might not have realised before, since you're forced to think about how your own character would react to a given situation. I've certainly had that happen, and the more I play my characters the more they develop - sometimes differing quite a lot from what I had originally intended them to be! it helps make the characters seem more alive to you.

and MG is a wonderful place to RP. I got my RP start there and it has seriously spoilt me for any other place. there's just no other site that seems to compare! SM is cool too, but it's definitely for more advanced players. MG is good no matter what level you are, we welcome all types and more experienced players will eagerly give help if it's asked for. I've introduced a few of my RP newbie friends to Mushroom Grove and they are all doing very well indeed and love it there.

so yes, sorry for gushing. I adore my little Grove, as if you couldn't tell. you're welcome to at least create an account and have a look around. I would love to RP with you sometime if you do join!

akokolupe In reply to swift-whippet [2007-09-28 02:25:59 +0000 UTC]

You're welcome!

Oh geez, see I've never heard anybody talk about it that way before. I guess I never really thought about it. I'm planning on RPing a Miniature Poodle character I've drawn before, but never uploaded here.

Okay, I think if join anywhere it will be there, then. The thing I'm most nervous about is jumping into stories that have already happened, and just all of a sudden there's this random new dog. But it sounds like the MGers will be nice =3 I'll definitely check it out, and let you know if I do join!

Hey, no problem. I'm glad you did, cause now I'm more willing to try it. Thanks!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

swift-whippet In reply to akokolupe [2007-09-28 02:38:12 +0000 UTC]

well, I'm a character animator at heart, so I really do feel for each of my characters whether I'm drawing them, writing about them or making them move. characterisation is a big thing with me, and RPing has only helped me with both that and keeping my writing skills up to scratch!

minipoodle yay! I have a minipoodle character on their too, though I've never drawn her. we should have them meet up or something! xD

if that's your chief worry, don't let it be. the MG plot is moving very slowly, it's easy to get into and understand, and new characters appear all the time - since new people join all the time, and old players create new characters all the time - and they are all assimilated into the fabric of the community with no trouble at all. trust me, I've both seen it and had it happen.

fwee!

akokolupe In reply to swift-whippet [2007-09-29 01:32:20 +0000 UTC]

Yes, character development and characterization is important to me too. It's fun to come up with a character's personality, backstory, and why they are that way. Yea, that would help a lot...

Yup! I want one haha. Ahh sweet. Haha mine's a boy.... XD

That's good, ahh and kind of relieving. Now I'm gunna go check it out! Do you have to have an account to look around?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

swift-whippet In reply to akokolupe [2007-09-29 01:41:18 +0000 UTC]

that is very awesome, because there is no better way to develop and come to understand your characters better than RP I find. I guess - compared with just writing stories about them in your head - because you're depending on the response of a character and a situation that you can't control or predict, it takes more effort to think of how your own character will respond. you get to see sides of your own character you might not have before, I know that's certainly been the case for me. and the other person (hopefully!) is having the same experience, so it's all very fun and interesting. ^^

...and mine's a girl. ZOMG. o.o she's spayed, though. xD

you need an account to read the threads, yes. but there is a guest board open to the public if you want to ask any questions. and the rules are open to the public too, so you can have a quick look through those.

if you do want to read any of my threads, I have some saved in my character journal that I particularly liked. I've edited them so they read more like stories, but the basic writing of both or all parties is still there.

Yea, that makes sense. It's like..you'd learn more about yourself that way too. =3 Andddd I'd be happy, because I'd be learning more about writing and developing characters.

Haha. Well they could be friends .. XD

Okay, I'll take a look. At the website and some of your threads. It's all so interesting !

akokolupe In reply to swift-whippet [2007-09-29 02:31:04 +0000 UTC]

Aw, awesome! Yea, I just read through a couple. =3

I most definitely am! I also just read through the rules of MG...there are quite a few! Haha I feel like I'd mess something up. Since there's like, a plot and stuff that you can't join and it's all so confusing..I suppose it would make more sense once I can actually see the site up and running. I'll be looking at it over the weekend and deciding soon if I'm going to join, since I don't want to join, then never be online.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

swift-whippet In reply to akokolupe [2007-09-29 03:16:40 +0000 UTC]

don't feel that way - most of the rules are really just common courtesy and sense. as for the plot, it's pretty simple. there are some characters that you can adopt to play for the plot, and those will be the ones taking an active part in the plot itself. your personal characters may or may not come into contact with the plot and the packs and the villains, depending on your own preference.

anyways, yes, people joining and then never doing anything is a big petpeeve of mine so I appreciate the sentiment ^^

either way, I really would love to see you on there ^^ I've got to know some of my dA buddies that much more through this site since it's an extra way for us to interact and an extra fun thing to do together!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

akokolupe In reply to swift-whippet [2007-09-29 03:19:18 +0000 UTC]

Yea, those I don't mind at all. I just hope I don't forget any! XD Okay, so there's like certain threads for the 'lot'? That you can't join unless you have a plot character?

Haha no problem. Yea, that's rather frustrating.

Yea, it sounds like a lot of fun! And it's cool that some dA people are on there. =3 Then it's not just random people on the internet, it's random artists on the internet XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

swift-whippet In reply to akokolupe [2007-09-29 04:44:39 +0000 UTC]

I'm sure you'll be fine. Yes, there are certain plot threads for the plot characters only, but the plot characters can interact with anyone they want, depending on whether their players want to play them outside or not. at any rate the plot is moving very slowly because several people who signed up to play plot characters have disappeared on us also, not all the plot characters have been adopted yet.

hahaha. some of them don't draw though. but yes, there's no shortage of good artists or good writers there! just my sort of place

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

akokolupe In reply to swift-whippet [2007-09-29 16:37:20 +0000 UTC]

Ahh lame. You'd think those who are part of the plot and are important to MG would stick around...
Can anyone adopt a character?

Oh yes! It sounds like so much fun. My kind of place too.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

swift-whippet In reply to akokolupe [2007-09-29 16:52:29 +0000 UTC]

yes indeed, anyone at all You just have to PM a sample of how you would play the character to the sitemistress, and if she likes what you do, they're yours. people can also create characters for others to adopt, and the adoption process works the same way - with you giving a sample of your RPing that character to the person who created them

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

akokolupe In reply to swift-whippet [2007-09-29 17:06:21 +0000 UTC]

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

swift-whippet In reply to akokolupe [2007-09-29 17:30:51 +0000 UTC]

oh of course, you can have as many characters as you like as long as they are all kept active
