Description newest character on Mushroom Grove , my "bully" whippet Golddust. it's a fascinating phenomenon -> [link] although I feel bad for the dogs. the last thing they need is some idiot that decides they look cool and starts breeding them on purpose. :\

History:
Golddust was born much to his breeders' dismay and chagrin. Both his parents were extremely fast dogs on the whippet racing circuit, and they had had high hopes for the litter that would result from the union of such a pair. As they grew older, four of the five puppies looked perfectly healthy and normal, but Golddust was hardly recognisable as a whippet. His muscles bulged from his sides, giving him the look of some strange hybrid dog on steroids, and to top it all off, he wasn't even particularly fast, his heavy cramp-prone muscle putting him at a disadvantage to his sleek, swift brothers and sisters. Feeling him to be useless, his breeder promptly disposed of him at a local animal shelter.

The as-yet-unnamed puppy was spotted by a young man who took him to be some kind of pit bull cross. Imagining the dog to be his ticket into the fighting rings, the youth hurried the whippet pup home and began his 'training', taunting him, trying to get him to snap. The dog, puzzled and alarmed by this, usually sought refuge by slinking away with his ears flat, only resorting to unwilling bared teeth and bites when he was backed into a corner, terrified. Annoyed at the lack of response from what he had thought was a fighting dog, the youth often took his frustrations out on the dog himself.

Finally, desperate, the man decided to take the dog to the ring anyway, thinking that perhaps other dogs would be the key to unlocking the ferocity that he still felt sure was somewhere in that deep muscled chest. It might have gone very ill with the dog if the fighting ring had not been swarmed upon by police that very night he was scheduled for his first fight, the dog fighters caught and the dogs taken away.

At this point in time the young dog was about a year and a few months of age, and when his new foster owner first saw him he was cringing and shivering in his crate, obviously traumatised. The dog was quickly rushed to a vet to be treated for any physical injuries, and over the next half a year he was worked with to overcome the mental and emotional scars that had been inflicted upon him by his uncaring dogfighter master. It was also during this time that it was discovered he was in fact a double-muscled whippet, and not any kind of mastiff or bull dog.

The dog was named Golddust, for the golden brindled spotting that decorated his white coat, and he was eventually adopted by a young whippet handler named Johnny had just moved to Mushroom Grove. Underneath the muscle and bulk, Golddust was still a whippet at heart, and he responded eagerly to Johnny. The two remain together to this day, and Golddust has even found good friends in the two whippets owned by Johnny's good friend, Beth.

yeah, I know. D: I was so horrified-fascinated when I first saw Wendy, but at least they're neutering and homing them instead of putting them down just because they're double-muscled.
that is a slightly disturbing mental image, but it is rather amusing. xD

They make me feel sad really...cause like you mentioned, all you need is someone to think they look cool and try and breed them. People can be so dumb sometimes -_-

I know. some people don't take anything into consideration beyond what they personally see as a 'cool-looking' dog. bully whippets need a lot more care than normal whippets because all that muscle impedes tham and they have cramping problems supposedly. they take it in their stride like the dogs they are, but I doubt any one of them would deliberately choose to be a bully over a normal whippet. :\

I know! all they need is some idiot to go OMG THIS DOG LOOKS COOL LOL and start breeding them on purpose. they take it in their stride and love the hell out of life because they're dogs after all, but I mean come on. they still have the light whippet frame under all that muscle! it can't be good for them to be that way.

the article doesn't show up for me. D:
I love how you can take a whippet and draw it as... well, a bully-looking dog!

awesome background story, too.
I should roleplay more... I stopped a while ago. -_- it just got boring for me, for some reason... I have no imagination. LOL.

well bully whips do exist. I had to ref from photos of them. it's a gene mutation whereby the dogs experience abnormal muscle growth, but it's a recessive gene and only shows up if you have two copies of it. if a dog has one copy of it, it is actually a faster runner because the muscle development is better than that of a 'normal' whippet with no copies of the gene at all. apparently this phenomenon has also cropped up with cattle and racing greyhounds.

all they need is some idiot to go OMG THESE DOGS LOOK COOL LOL and start breeding them on purpose, though. I think that's just wrong. they still have a normal whippet skeleton and frame under all that muscle, and they're prone to cramps. it can't be easy for them, even if they take it in their stride and love the hell out of life because they're dogs, after all.

aw it's fine. everyone has their moments. it would be cool if you showed up on MG again, though. I'd love to try a thread with you sometime if you do ^^

thanks!

ugh, I googled them. They remind of what's happened to AmStaffs and APBT's. they've gone from slim, working dogs to big-headed hippo-looking dogs that couldn't run for 5 seconds without stopping for breath!
I mean, racing is one thing, but I'm sure people WILL start cross breeding them with bullies and whatnot, and using them for fights. -_- ugh, I don't even want to think about it.

well it's not really the same thing because bully whipps are the result of a gene mutation. it's not like people are breeding them bigger and bigger and trying to get them to go bulky. it just happened, and iso far it only seems to pop up in the racing strains. breeders are definitely going to be more careful about it in the future, they're already working towards stopping the bullies from appearing.

I don't see how a bully whippet would be ANY use as a fighting dog. they have so much muscle hanging off a skinny light skeleton, they probably aren't even as mobile as a normal whippet and they're prone to cramps. whippets were bred for speed, they're extremely agile but have extremely thin skin that tears easily and they don't have the thick jaws and large frame of a dog that's bred to hold its own against a bull or a bear. it's be like pitting a sprinter against a pro boxer in a fight.

but then again, I guess dog fighters are pretty moronic in general.

people today see any muscular dog = FIGHTING PIT BULL TYPE OMG IT MUST BE MEAN.
hell, BIG dogs in general get the blame. D: People always think Jayda is some big monster dog when I take her out in public... then again, my mom found out that she only acts aggressive towards people because of me...

So I guess it's kind of like panda shepherds from GSD's...? only a muscular difference instead of a color difference?

my friend's IG was mistaken for a pit bull, apparently. people need a reality check.

because of you? o.O any idea as to why or how?

ooh what are panda shepherds? if it's a genetic mutation, then yes I guess that is similar.

LOL, don't get me started on mistaken identities! people always think Jay's a gsd mix... and I know tons of people who have purebreds that are mistaken for other breeds. xP I know someone who's hound mix was mistaken for a lab, and some lady asked to buy her and breed her!

yeah, apparently Jayda is protective of me. She has an injury over her eye, so my mom took her to the vet last Friday (I didn't go because I was asleep), and apparently she acted like an ANGEL. she barely had to be muzzled! but whenever I'm around her, she acts out towards strangers.
Brynn is comin' over to spend the night at my place, so -hopefully- if I'm out of whatever room they're in, my mom will be able to socialize Jay with her easily... last time she was over, Jay wasn't too happy!

I don't support the breeding of them. one genetic mutation could lead to another, as harmless as the current one may seem...
a panda shep is basically a tri-colored, almost piebald shepherd. it basically has the uniform black and tan, but with white on the legs, feet, chest, and face (which means that whatever gene causes it is "covering" the other markings, I think).

Bella has been mistaken for a kangaroo, a monkey, and a chihuahua. also a whippet, but see, that I can understand. xD

aw wow. I guess that just means she feels the need to guard you? Suzanne Clothier has some great articles on aggression and other things here [link] if you want to read them. she's one of my heroes. :3

so true, especially if you isolate the gene pool even further by only breeding the mutants to the mutants. and purebred dogs have enough health problems of their own as it is. and yes white masks other colours. dogs can be genetically fawn or red that doesn't show because they carry a gene that makes them predominantly white. so a 'white dog with black spots' is really just a black dog with very large white spots! xD
