Description
and my second-year final animation is finished! woohoo! (now I have to get cracking on the essay, projects and test-studying that I've been putting off for weeks... >>; )but anyhow. we all had to choose a proverb from a list and run with it, and mine was originally 'fools rush in where angels fear to tread', but it just got too complicated and long so I had to switch and pare it all down
sucky, tiny, soundless version uploaded here. I heard that dA is picky with background music and such for some reason, so I didn't upload the original version here. go here to see the real version: [link] it takes less time to load anyway, it's such a big file

Niiiice! I think it's just awesome... the animation's frames are really smooth and crisp, especially considering you did them all on paper (right..?) ESPECIALLY the ...duckling... tern... jester's cap (LOL) ... loved it.
BTW, I read somewhere about having halos... on the swans...? I was thinking.... would it be possible to draw one halo, cut it out, and keep moving it along?
... but that's just so me, I just love taking the easy way out

MAN, the animation was so smooth, I mean, it looked like Disney 2d animation.
the little joker duck (if that is what you want to call it) was so cute,
shame that he was rejected by the swans at first.
the swans are such stuck ups.
This is going into my favorites.

thanks muchly. I'm glad you like!
you say such nice things.
The swans weren't meant to be stuck-ups so much as just.. different from the duck. They prefer things being calm and peaceful and pretty and so when a little duck comes along wrecking their peaceful morning it's just annoying to them. Can't really blame them, I think xD but then I'm sympathetic to all my characters (even the MONSTERBIRD. poor guy just wanted a snack. xD)

lol! I normally just go through frame by frame, i should really try starting with keyframes though, then my animations may make more sense lol! Do you use a lightbox when you are animating?
Thankies! More coming soon XD

swift-whippet In reply to Ellakins [2007-04-22 12:53:00 +0000 UTC]
Keyframes are good not for making sense - I animated my first film mainly straight-ahead, and I like to think it still makes sense - but for consistency. Keyframes and inbetweening help you make sure your characters look the same and make for much smoother animation they're also less tedious.. and it's so much fun to be a little rough!
yes I do
yay!

Yeah o-o; my characters shrink with every frame... I probably should work on that =3. Like the animation i just uploaded, the anthro form is smaller than the quad lirl, that was not supposed to happen X.X

eeee, so glad you like :3
and NO, HAHA. that was artistic license. I figure swans don't really have curly wings and ducks don't have jesterhats growing out of their heads, so a hugeass MONSTERBIRD that preyed on swans might exist in that world too xDDD

YES SPIN DOCTORS. I was vaguely tossing around the idea of putting music in my film this time since I hadn't given it much thought, but it was a bit late and I had other stuff to do so I put it pretty much out of my mind and resigned myself to having a truly silent film. But my film was originally inspired by the adage 'fools rush in where angels fear to tread', and it hit me suddenly the day I was to finish shooting the animation that "ZOMG the Spin Doctors have a song called 'Where Angels Fear To Tread'! joy!" So that morning I was listening to my Spin Doctors albums again, and Where Angels Fear To Tread was too slow and didn't really work out but in the process I heard More Than She Knows and it was PERFECT! Then I tried it with the footage and it synched perfectly too!
so yes, the Spin Doctors rawk (though of course they do anyway). :3 YAY FOR THEM. (we haven't squeed over them yet which is a surprise because I don't often meet Spin Doctors fans. what albums do you have? o.o)
so glad you like! the Ugly Duckling was sweet and I loved it so much when I was younger but I suppose I'm more into just being yourself, whether that's a duck or a swan? ;3

Aweeeesome, i couldnt imagine doing an animation in anything other than flash.. seems like it would take foreverrrrr. Really great work though, nice and smooth and at least you can tell whats going on, i've had some crazy nonsense animations spring up before XD
Fun fun, hope you got a good grade on that
And i lovethat little jester hat type head on the duck XD
π: 0 β©: 1
swift-whippet In reply to colonel-strawberry [2007-04-20 01:12:56 +0000 UTC]
LOL aw, it doesn't take that long xD it's just drawing after all, so it only takes forever if you take a long time putting a new sheet of paper on top of the old one and I enjoy animating off the computer since I like drawing off the computer. I feel more in control somehow... though I hope to mess around with Flash sometime during the summer. I love your Flash animations! and I'm glad you liked this
I hope I get a good grade on it too haha, but my TA liked it a lot so I hope that's a good sign... o.o
heehee, the original proverb that inspired me was 'fools rush in where angels fear to tread', so I based their character designs around that :3 the swans originally had halo-type markings on their heads too but that was too annoying to animate x3

Really? Well i draw, dogs anyways, a lot better on the computer than on paper for some reason... I should try animating on paper... But you'd have to scan it all in afterwards? And then what program would you load it onto?
Ah well, you did a sweet job anyways <3
π: 0 β©: 1
swift-whippet In reply to colonel-strawberry [2007-04-23 19:07:51 +0000 UTC]
*is slow at replying to comments* x_o;;;
scanning it in yields the best results, since you can clean up and tweak each individual frame in photoshop or what have you. you can also cut out the characters and put them on another background. For this project I used a camera connected to Adobe Premiere to 'shoot' my film, which automatically makes it a QuickTime-compatible clip. Much easier and less hassle, but you'd have a harder time editing the footage (heck, I don't even know how I'd go about doing that!). One of my friends developed a method using a tripod for her digital camera; she takes a picture of each frame and saves it, thus giving us the advantages of both: simple to import into the computer, and easily editable. I need to try that out when I get home
Programs depend on which method you use, though if you were scanning or using my friend's method, photoshop or whatever you were opening it in would be fine. Adobe ImageReady would probably work for compositing the frames (though I don't know how); I personally use Adobe After Effects since it's what I was taught to use and I know my way around it fairly well.
thank you!

Both ways make sense i guess, though they still seem like a pain... oh well! i'm sure i'll end up using them at some point or another
