Description So after an exhaustive many weeks of doing human walk cycles for animation (not that I'm complaining, I certainly needed the practice ) we finally hit animals, and our first four-legged walk cycle happened to be, serendipitously, a dog. ooohhh.

Normally I'd actually steer clear of sighthounds - particularly Swift - because I'd just feel like I'd need to challenge myself somehow with a different breed. It's why there are so few actual sighthounds in my animations, and I hadn't animated Swift at all in class (I'd animated her once, running, for our very first assignment in freshman year, before any of us actually knew what we were doing and because I know the key poses of a sighthound run cycle since, you know. I did actually study them). But this time, I guess since I was (and will be, for another week or so x_X) just bogged down with work on all corners, I was like "you know, screw it. I need something I can draw without thinking too much about it - let's just go with Swift." So I did, and the walk came out better than I'd hoped and my teacher liked it too :3

But I remember that after I shot this on the lunchbox I kind of just sat there and watched her walk for a while. It was a special moment, since as I said, this was the first time I had ever properly animated her. I think I should animate her more often. :3

homg you did such a beautiful job, Swift! Even in motion, the fluidity of your style continues throughout! This makes me want to try animating again. Hopefully I'll have some more time to experiment when I get out of classes!

It's great to hear from you though missy! I missed you! and I would love to see you do some animations. We must catch up.

This is very good. I happen to really enjoy pencil animations vs. digital. ^^ If you don't mind me asking, what kind of class are you taking and what for?

I don't mind you asking at all. It was a traditional animation class, and I took it because I'm majoring in Traditional Animation in college. terribly fun major!

so yeah, as you could probably tell I am in complete agreement with you on traditional animation. I'm the one that's studying it for a career!

Sweet! I actually might try some later on, because they are really interesting. The only thing is the frames that kill me. XD I had tried to make an icon one time and it was onyl a blink but I kept trying to redraw the wolf's head and it looked so bad. hehe I want to keep practicing them though because the interest me. ^^

they're lots of fun, yes! I'd advise reading books by Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston, Shamus Culhane, Bob Clampett and other classical animators. I learn a lot from their advice. they're the ones that had to figure out how to do it without any teachers or school, anyway!

Woah! I always think about things like that and I am so amazed. People who started doing these awesome things had to do it on their own without anyone teaching them. XD I shall definetely take your advice and read theirs. ^^

It told me I was forbidden to see it. Kept saying I wasn't allowed to view it or something. Earlier I got it to come up but it wouldn't "load". The animation never played (and I did press play after I let it sit a while).

do you know, I am thinking that it might be because dA has started up this whole 'Film' thing and you have to be registered with them or something to submit anything video-related. :[ sorry.

ah well, have a link to my demo reel instead! this little animation forms part of it anyway. :3 -> [link]

<3<3<3<3 LUNCHBOX!!! hahaha

i miss using the lunchbox...it was so quick and simple and nonsensical. hahaha.

good round for you doing a four-legged cycle. i'm starting to realize that four legs are my forte...two legs is just so boring to me (thankfully, one of my two thesis characters is four-legged). she is very clean and dainty, which is what i think of when i think whippet. her tail is a bit jittery...since she's walking you should have it just sway back and fourth to her hips, but just barely. can't wait to see more animation .

also what works nice is if you have a guide sheet that has "floor lines" to help guide the feet straight. this is animated on a bit of a tilt, which isn't a problem since she could very well be walking uphill, but it distracts a little bit from analyzing the legs. also...watch those surface designs...they tend to jitter a bit too.

you are excellent!!! keep up the animating!

Hahaha yes, SVA has a tendency to stick to dated technology. not that I'm complaining too much ^^ I enjoy lunchboxes. I think I will miss them. D:

Four legs actually came more naturally to me than two, funnily enough xDDD thanks for the tail tip, I'll have to remember that for next time. OHGOSH that tail. I reanimated it and the markings twice and they still jitter. -tears hair out- Would you have any advice on how to keep the markings straight? They really bug me, but this is actually the less jittery version of them, so I guess they just look better by comparison xDD

Odd, I actually did do this with floorlines. o_O Maybe the pegbar on the scanner wasn't straight or something, bah > I didn't even notice that though

Thanks muchly for the feedback, it really does mean a lot coming from you ^^

no prob! i love helping out with animation...in faaaaact...I love helping out so much that i wanted to give you some tips that might help out those floaty, jittery markings. although, i started typing some and though "what the heck...i hate all this writing it sounds like i'm rambling!". so..........i made a movie. and drew in some examples. it's easier for me that way anyways. gotta love flash and after effects!!! woo!!

see the video here: [link]

sorry...my lines arn't THAT jitter free tho...i was drawing with a mouse in flash. argh. my new wacom comes in the mail tomorrow tho, yaaay!

HOMG YOU ARE INSANE. -SAVES FOREVER- That's going to come in reeaally handy, you have no idea... thank you soooo much for doing that! I find visual references easier both to ref from and explain things anyway, so that's just perfect I hope someday to be that comfortable with Flash and AE. eh. getting there xD

Yay for new tablets!

Wow! Wow wow wow! That's really good! It's so clean and smooth.

It took forever and a day to download, though. XD;

And.. I have a quesssstion. How many frames was this? Is it really 24 frames per second of animation? Good Lord. @_@;

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

swift-whippet In reply to Mizzkitty [2007-01-06 19:42:19 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I'm sorry about that download time I wanted to keep it big enough for the detail to be seen, which required making it a larger size. I apologise. but thank you, so much! so glad you like.

Heehee, I can't remember whether I set playback to 24 or 30 fps when I saved the file o_O; but it was 20 drawings, if that's what you mean.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Mizzkitty In reply to swift-whippet [2007-01-08 01:15:40 +0000 UTC]

Ah okay, thanks.

I was just asking because I believe I read somewhere that it takes 24 drawings for 1 second of animation. Whoa nelly.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

swift-whippet In reply to Mizzkitty [2007-01-10 20:07:58 +0000 UTC]

It's usually 30 these days with digital; it was 24 back in the day. And it takes 24 frames - not necessarily 24 drawings. That would move too fast, unless you were really anal and drew every single frame as a different drawing xD Like most people here, I usually shoot my stuff on twos - meaning I shoot each drawing twice so it moves at a nice pace and yet smoothly enough to be believable. So a second of animation for me would be really only 12 drawings ..or 15, if we're talking 30 fps.

On any other server the file size would be no problem, but it's pretty painful here. Nonetheless, the cycle is smooth and believable. I think the ears move just enough!
