Description EDIT: messed with the clouds a little. not bad!

More colour/background practice, yay! I am appalled that it took me this long to start doing underpaintings and getting the general colour scheme right before I refine it. Not 100% pleased with the clouds but the sky looked naked without them D:

My Maremma Sheepdog character, Sirocco, doing his job. I imagine he's scaring off a stray dog that got too close for his comfort, or something.

Thanks! And yes, they both have the same purpose which was to live with and guard sheep; the Great Pyr is just more commonly known here since it is an AKC breed and the Maremma is not. The Great Pyr also seems to be relatively popular as a pet as well as a working dog, while the Maremma is primarily working. There are other breeds like the Kuvasz and the Akbash that are also large white European dogs that guard sheep, so there's probably some kind of common ancestry there (haven't looked into the history with that much detail just yet). You can read about Livestock Guard Dogs here: [link]

Neat! I didn't see that you put the breed name. So many amazing dog breeds! I am with the CKC and I think they recignize less then the AKC

Oh i like it! Nice environment, the blue filter does the job of making the night and somehow you managed to keep the green alive, just enough. I always find that hard on night scenes!

What about life updates? I remember you were about to move... that happened? Is everything alright?

swift-whippet In reply to maria-mar [2011-12-08 20:37:32 +0000 UTC]

You know, this is actually my first night picture done without a blue filter! *dance* I just picked and mixed the colours in the overall scheme to have some blue in them. *purplekecleon 's colouring tutorial has been really helpful to me with regards to picking colours, and you might like to check that out and experiment, interesting stuff: [link]

Iiit's complicated. If you want I'll shoot you an email about it sometime. ♥

Yes!! But after i read it so we have more to discuss

I really enjoy the color scheme used here and how you balanced the light and shadow.
I think the clouds look good, although perhaps not so much blurring effect next time? Clouds sometimes do have solid lines on them when you look at them.
I seriously JUST noticed the grass and it looks great! Great job balancing the the highlights of the lantern bouncing off the grass, the moonlight and shadows from the dark (remember kids, BLUE is your friend during night-time paintings, just say NO to black). I don't think I'll ever get the hand of digital painting.

swift-whippet In reply to Erith [2011-12-07 04:11:37 +0000 UTC]

Aw, thanks! I seriously have to thank *purplekecleon 's colouring tutorial for giving me more insight into how I use colours, maybe that would help you out too!

I didn't use blurring effect, I just used a really soft brush. T_T; I pretty much never use the blur, dodge and burn tools, I think they make stuff look terrible lol. But you're right that I probably should outline the clouds in keeping with everything else! Thanks, I'm gonna go do that now.
