Description since I was on a rui-shi kick, I decided to revisit one of my characters that I've had around for a few years now, though I don't think I've posted any art of him here.

This is Hsing (星; 'star'), my brindle Pekingese character, who has the power to transcend his own small body in the form of a gargantuan golden lion dog (if you're in any way familiar with my characters on MG, he's the lastborn son of Mo-Li the matriarch and the litter brother of Yao and Mingzhu. CROSSOVERS). He's part of a story that ~SockHero and I have been developing (or not, in more recent times) and I'd dearly like to do a lot more with him. It felt good to draw him again - the first time I've ever drawn his liondog form, too - and it gave me some new ideas! I'd like to give him a mate, too, like all guardian lions should have.

Lol. I'm not sure if the Pekingese breed came first or the statues, or if both were simply modeled after the idea of lions. but thank you.

I always thought those lions looked kind of like dogs but I couldn't put my finger on why exactly. Now I can! Who would have thought the comparison would be so strong with a little Pekingese? :3

aw, thank you! I didn't used to (like my pointy noses, obviously) but they grew on me. I love their long histories too, fascinating.

I'm thinking of making her a white Peke (or Pug), just because those were apparently not favoured - regarded as the spirit of someone deceased - which makes sense to me because white was and is a colour associated with death in Chinese culture. MORE RESEARCH NEEDS TO BE DONE

That's really ironic considering that white represents "purity" and such here in America (to think it'd mean death in Chinese culture!)
I take it that also has something to do with why red is so celebrated?

Double meanings (especially across cultures) always fascinate me. Granted, white IS also associated with purity (and the element of gold or metal) in the traditional five elements system: [link] So there's kind of a double meaning there as well.
Like I said, MORE RESEARCH. but not so much that I forget to create a character at all xD

Haha speaking of research, I have yet to delve into the Libra and elements that you sent links to me about before XD And yes, double meanings are very intriguing, especially their origins and why it came to be/why it's still upheld.

Thanks! The influence of the look of dog breeds like the Peke on guardian lion statue designs is so clear to me that it was just a matter of taking the stuff that was similar and drawing attention to it.
