A past acquaintance of mine was also Chinese! (By descent.) I also once befriended a Japanese boy.

I will not tell unless you really want to know.

Kidna scaring since I just saw a Jindo dog not to long ago roaming a market place in Korea.

yay! I can only read the Chinese but I did some googling for the rest.

I don't think it's that scary xD Jindo are a Korean breed so that seems only natural you'd see one in Korea.

There's nothing wrong with not knowing a lot as long as you learn things as you go. :3

That is so freaky. I can actually read the Chinese and Japanese, (but not Korean). At least I can tell the languages apart though, either written or spoken. I AM SO GIFTED.

xD

notreally.

Oh can you read the kanji/hanzi? That's interesting. Can you actually read what it says or just tell them apart?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Athazagoraphobias In reply to swift-whippet [2008-12-05 08:41:41 +0000 UTC]

Tell them apart and read them.
Well, I only know about 12 characters in Chinese and maybe 20+ in Japanese since I live in Asia.

swift-whippet In reply to Athazagoraphobias [2008-12-05 15:42:33 +0000 UTC]

I live in Asia as well, Mandarin Chinese is actually my second language. I did need some help with writing the Korean and Japanese though. If you figure out how, it's not hard to tell the alphabets apart.

Athazagoraphobias In reply to swift-whippet [2008-12-06 09:48:10 +0000 UTC]

I actually can't see how people confuse them with each other myself. They've always seemed too different to me. :/

I'm so happy now that I can actually read the Chinese [and write it, though like, a million times not as neat]. <3
I love how you draw chows

You're welcome! or should I say, xiรจ xiรจ

which reminds me, I should ask - which Chinese is it that you speak? I'm learning Mandarin, and I wasn't sure which one it was you knew. I can't remember things for the life of me, I swear xD

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

swift-whippet In reply to terceleto [2008-09-25 02:54:59 +0000 UTC]

Bu ke qi! (I have no clue how to put the pinyin thingies in there.)

I know Mandarin, because that's what we all learn in school - 'common speech', as it were (quite literally; pu tong yu). Our government decided to have everyone speak the same Chinese, but since most people speak dialect at home they know both to some degree. My family all speaks English at home, but I do want to learn my own dialect (Teochew/Chaozhou) at some point. :3 They have classes in places, I think, though they're hard to find.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

terceleto In reply to swift-whippet [2008-09-25 03:25:41 +0000 UTC]

I only knew the รจ from having to use it in a report when typing up a Scottish name.

ah That sounds so cool, I figured besides Cantonese there would be other dialects and the like. It's so neat, I'm having a bunch of fun in class too, of course, I more or less know how to introduce myself thus far, but that should change by the end of the semester.
Wo jiao isi, wo shi xuesheng. Ni jiao shenme mingzi? Ni shi xuesheng, ma?

...yea, simple stuff like that [and I have no idea what the alt codes are for all those tone marks z3]

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

swift-whippet In reply to terceleto [2008-09-25 04:41:24 +0000 UTC]

xD! I want to learn how to write in actual hanzi. (or 'kanji'; pshaw I say, it was hanzi first.) I've seen people do that and I don't know how. D:

Oh, there are a ton! China's a huge country after all, so there are oodles of regional accents and dialects and everything. In my country we mainly got the ones on the southern coast, since they're the ones that emigrated to Singapore. (Hokkien, Teochew, Cantonese, Hakka, and Hainanese, mainly.) I'm thrilled you're having fun, I wish I had had more fun in my own Chinese classes. Mainly it was just dull, so my Chinese isn't as great as it might have been. I'm working on it though. ;3
hahah, omg. Do you have a Chinese name now? (Yi-Xi, or something?) Simple is how you get started! And simple is pretty much what gets you by.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

terceleto In reply to swift-whippet [2008-09-25 06:30:42 +0000 UTC]

My teacher is teaching us the characters now that we have learned the pinyin, so whatever I can say in Chinese, I theoretically could write [though I don't usually remember them].

That's too neat Makes sense too! We weren't given any names or asked to pick one. I'm surprised, especially since my teacher has such a hard time with my name

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

swift-whippet In reply to terceleto [2008-09-25 15:33:22 +0000 UTC]

I can't even imagine how difficult that must be, seriously. I was raised to be bilingual practically from preschool so I got the basics pretty early on (my Chinese isn't great, but it's enough to get me by). Learning a completely different language having a firmly established one in your head already is just insane to me. o_o Anyhow, if you need help with the writing... *waves hand*

omg that's so annoying. xD I asked also because when my brother was taking Spanish class they had to pick Spanish names to go by. I think it'd be a good idea for you guys to have Chinese names to go by - and I mean REAL PROPER Chinese names, not those stupid phonetic reproductions of names in other languages that people get because they think it's cool. xD It's one of my pet peeves, since I will look at it and go THAT'S NOT A NAME. You can do that with Japanese because they have a purely phonetic alphabet alongside their kanji, but in Chinese it just looks and sounds like a random jumble of words and usually has a pretty ludicrous meaning. I can understand them doing it for famous people so they can refer to them in newspapers etc. but it just annoys me when they sell those things like 'THIS IS 'EMILY' IN CHINESE'. Would make things hella easier to immerse yourself in, I'd imagine!

/minirant, sorry. xD

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

terceleto In reply to swift-whippet [2008-09-25 21:43:48 +0000 UTC]

It's really not that bad Then again, I've always had a knack for picking up languages.

yea that's silly. I definitely wouldn't like my name written out, I'd want something that's more like a real name!

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

swift-whippet In reply to terceleto [2008-09-25 21:50:11 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it's probably one of your strengths. I'm looking forward to learning Teochew - my family thinks it's pointless since everyone speaks English now, but bah. I'm odd. xD

'yi-li-sha-bi-shi'? ew. xD! To me it'd make more sense to pick a name that meant the same thing as your non-Chinese name does. Not that Shelley' and 'Ming-Yan' mean the same thing, but seems like the 'Chinese version' of your name would be the one that has the same meaning!

No I didn't. The Akita was chosen to represent Japan (even though I now realise it's an American one, wtf.), the Chow was chosen to represent China, and the Jindo was chosen to represent Korea. Putting in another Japanese dog would throw everything out of balance.
thank you!

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

swift-whippet In reply to PuppyDawgChick [2008-07-11 16:42:08 +0000 UTC]

don't worry, you didn't offend. I didn't see your add-on comment, so I was just trying to explain I didn't 'forget' anything. :3 understand, though, that I try to do what works for the picture aesthetically, not just because someone thinks it is 'cuter' or not. I chose the Akita because it's a larger dog, so it balances out the Chow in the composition. :3

also, saying I should have drawn a different dog breed instead of the one I picked is not the best way to make conversation with me. I do get quite a lot of people asking me why I didn't draw this breed and that breed, and sometimes it gets tiresome when I have to keep explaining what I just did, and also that the breeds that appeal to you don't necessarily appeal especially to me. I'm not mad or anything, it's just so you understand where I'm coming from.

and hey, for what it is worth, I *have* drawn some Shiba: [link] [link] [link]

Yeah I saw those , they're very cute.

This is a wonderful piece!
The Jindo dog is not a very well known dog so seeing this picture was a pleasant surprise for me!

And you're right, many people think that all East Asians look the same and have the same culture but they are very different, even their dogs are! >XD

Instant favorite!

I really love how the chow looks! People do think of breeds as being the same. It's kinda sad. But then i'm a bit of a hypocrite, i used to mix up huskies and Malamutes-when i was like 9 or so- i feel forever shamed to mix them up too.
The different lanuages are amazing, though i knew the Chow was chinese and the Akita is Japenese, the middle one had been baffled for a while. Guess i don't know as much as i thought i did about dogs.
Would you belive that Chows and Sibes are on the Dangerous breeds list? I was sooo miffed, one of our best dogs was a Chow-husky mix. I will forever miss her. Poor Keesha girl. But she lived to be 15 so not bad for a dog. XD.
(Sorry for any spelling errors it's like 4 in the morning. XD. and i', sicker then a dog-no pun intended.)

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

swift-whippet In reply to Zykiel [2007-02-02 17:49:38 +0000 UTC]

The middle one is a Jindo dog from Korea, saying hi in Korean ^^

And to be honest this is not about mixing the breeds up. It's about mixing Chinese/Japanese/Korean culture up. I hate it when people think that we're all the same, you know?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Zykiel In reply to swift-whippet [2007-02-07 05:29:25 +0000 UTC]

Thinking things are the same is something people are -good- at. Why else have standerdlized tests(egh, spelling...i know it's wrong) i hate the things. I could have gotten a little bit of a scolorship if i hadn't been stiffed by one.
Science, History, Reading & Comprehention and even the writing parts( a few years ago but still to the point) all 2's on the MEAP first time around (well for that section), and taken the day i found out about the horrible things. Math 4. I had to retake it twice and still scored no higher then a 3. Now, i'm *stupid*. But i won't go into it anymore, it only makes me mad. So, hey i can get how thinking thier the same is agrivating.
not excatly the same thing, but same idea, i think.
(Sorry for the spelling, i'm really sick right now...)
