I don't...understand. *Feels dumb*

Chows are cute, and I like Akita's, too. :3 Never heard of the other breed, though.

The Chow is saying 'nin hao'. The Jindo is saying 'an nyoung ha sae yo'. The Akita is saying 'konnichiwa.' Basically they're all saying hello. x3 And there's no need to feel dumb!

Glad you like, and thanks for commenting! Jindos are a relatively obscure Korean breed, and make up part of the ancestry of modern-day Japanese dogs.

i love the chow since my grandmother has had one for as long as i can remember (2 diff dogs tho) both were black chows and the first looked more bear-like while the 2nd (and current) is more dog-like...considering they are dogs i hope you get what i mean, and nicely on them all!

I love the chow and that jindo, oh you captured the appearance so well. Very very nice.

Sadly I do not know what they are saying, but the writing looks so pretty and intricate.

I'm so glad to see that Jindos are recently being acknowledged as a breed. They've been outcast more as feral and an unpure breed until a few years ago. I loathe it when people think Jindos came form Akitas, but it's the other way around. Some 50 years ago or so, Korea was occupied by the Japanese and they slaughtered thousands of Korean dogs, and two uniquely Korean breeds were completely killed by the Japanese. One that survived was the Jindo, and many were taken to Japan to develp some of their breeds, like Akitas. Just some info I know about Jindos ^_^

My uncle has four Jindos in Korea. Loved them to bits, until we left for Canada. But anyway, the phrase reads, 'AnNyoungHaSeYo'. It's a polite way to say hello.

swift-whippet In reply to murelle [2006-05-23 02:19:37 +0000 UTC]

I only discovered Jindos recently (and once I did, I just had to make this picture xDD) and I think they're cool dogs. That's interesting about their history, I didn't know that.. it's so tragic about the other breeds. The Japanese occupation took its toll on both Korea and China - and the whole of Asia really. My country was occupied only three years, but it was horrific enough to make an impact on that generation. My great-grandmother used to say that, even recently, the sound of the Japanese language being spoken filled her with fear.

Thanks for commenting - and for clarifying about the Korean text, I feel much better now

Yeah...the world is really silent when it comes to the terror the Japanese brought. Especially to Korea. So many people sympathize about the Japanese A-Bomb droppings, but never even stop for a moment to realize what they did to other countries.

But anyway, no probs about the translation. Ask me anytime to translate anything to korean xD

swift-whippet In reply to murelle [2006-05-23 04:24:49 +0000 UTC]

True that. Especially now that Japan has this elevated 'kewlness' factor in the West. - they were the Axis power of Asia and that's the true extent of it. I can't say I'm discriminative against the Japanese or anything like that - I enjoy their country and culture a lot. (But where is the China/Korea love, I say? D

Hee, thanks! *checks out your gallery*

hahahahah!!!! That's pretty good shelley!! I like how you juxtaposed all three different breeds together!! I get annoyed too when people confuse Jindos with Akitas, or Akitas with Chows, or like that. I esp. like your rendering of the Jindo........you pretty much captured its characteristics, while making sure to differentiate between it and the other two!!! My only thing is whether or not the Akita is smaller or larger than an average Jindo, but whatever, you got it quite accurately and made it funny too!!! I own two Jindos of my own, so I pretty much now how they differ. And you also got the Korean text right, which is also a plus for your deviation (though I can't help you so much with the Chinese and Japanese texts). eOnce again, excellent work!!!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

swift-whippet In reply to DEW86 [2006-05-23 02:11:40 +0000 UTC]

Haha.. thanks! Actually this was supposed to be more of a cultural statement than just the breeds. I get irritated when people think Chinese, Japanese and Korean cultures and people are all the same.
I'm glad you think the Jindo looks right.. since all I had to work with was pictures and you actually have some.
Akita are larger. They're the Japanese fighting dogs and they're bigger than both Jindos and Chows - I checked my dog book for size comparisons. I made the Akita just a bit smaller so it would balance out better, though. And I didn't need any help with the Chinese text, I've known how to say hello since I could speak Mandarin (i.e. in kindergarten)

And how some people think they're all the same is beyond me. I have a friend who thinks that Chowchows, samoyeds (how do you say that in plural?) and akitas are the same breed. *rolls eyes*

swift-whippet In reply to Rhinne [2006-05-22 15:00:19 +0000 UTC]

LOL, it was actually supposed to be an underlying reference to how certain people (whom I've termed Occidental bastards, as a collective) seem to think that Chinese, Japanese and Korean people and cultures are all the same. There are BIG differences.

Thanks! I hope you eventually get your Jindo

swift-whippet In reply to Wolfdog [2006-05-22 14:54:55 +0000 UTC]

Tee, yeah, it is a konnichiwa! I wasn't sure whether to go for that, Ohayo, or Hajimemashite. Oh well. The Chinese says 'nin hao' which is a polite, formal, generic greeting, and I have NO idea what the Korean one says xDDD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Wolfdog In reply to swift-whippet [2006-05-22 14:58:57 +0000 UTC]

Nah, the konnichiwa is probably the best - seeing as ohayou is more good morning and hajimemashite is pleased to meet you. My flatmate can speak chinese so I can at least recognise when someone is speaking it even if I can't understand
