Description as promised, have some guardian lion (aka "fu/foo dog", which I refuse to directly call them) art! and a little factsheet of course.

'Fu' does mean prosperity or fortune in Mandarin Chinese (and interestingly enough, 'fu gou' or 'fu dog' if you will is apparently a common name for the Pekingese breed), but these guardian lion statues are known as shi-shi (stone lions) or rui-shi (auspicious lions). 'Foo Dog' is, I believe, a corruption of 'Dog of Fo', or 'Dog of Buddha'.

The lion dogs always come in mated pairs, the male to the right of the entrance and the female to the left (when facing the entrance from the outside). You can tell them apart thus: the male has a stone ball under his paw while the female has a cub, representing the Flower of Life and the Cycle of Life respectively.
Sometimes the male will have his mouth open and the female hers closed, which is supposed to represent the beginning and the end, or the concept of AUM in Buddhism and other Eastern religions. I find the yin-and-yang concept of the lion dogs fascinating, personally, and it irritates me when they're mistakenly represented with two male dogs (Mulan, I love you, but I'm looking at you again).

The appearance of Chinese dog breeds such as the Chow Chow and the Pekingese were quite obviously looked to for reference when it came to designing these lions, as many people in China at the time had never seen a real lion but nonetheless admired them for their strength and power.

I may develop these guys into characters.

Cool picture. Also, that small one's hair and eyebrows remind me of Ganondorf somewhat. I may be the only one...

Oh haha, the big stone lion statues outside the palace that they were trying to use to break through the door after the Huns captured the Emperor. I've seen that movie way too many times.
Glad you like, and thank you <3

Ha, very interesting! I had always wondered where the term "Fu Dogs" came from, because they never really looked like dogs specifically to me, or cats for that matter, just a mix or something akin. Really enjoying your recent works with Asian mythos! It's nice to read some research to go along with it 8D

I hopw you do make them characters, they're cute! Especially the cub!
Are you going to have them be lions or dogs?

swift-whippet In reply to SeekHim [2011-01-03 15:36:04 +0000 UTC]

I'd love to. Just have to decide what exactly I'd like to do with them. Thank you!!
Not lions or dogs, they'll be exactly what they are - guardian lion dogs!

SeekHim In reply to swift-whippet [2011-01-03 16:42:26 +0000 UTC]

What will you have them guarding a temple or a palace?
Got their names picked out yet? If not I'll be posting
some Chinese lists soon!

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

swift-whippet In reply to SeekHim [2011-01-03 16:50:24 +0000 UTC]

Thanks but no need, haha. I'm of Chinese descent, grew up in Asia, and have a decent enough command of Mandarin, so I'll figure out their names on my own. And I haven't really thought about that yet, because that isn't where I'm starting to figure stuff out.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

SeekHim In reply to swift-whippet [2011-01-03 18:25:21 +0000 UTC]

I'll have to come to you for names then!

Maybe you could help me with this then: I know that Shih-Tzu means Lion Dog and thatSongshi Quan/Chow Chow means Puffy Lion Dog.

But how does one say Pekinese in Chinese and what is the meaning? And what does Lo-sze mean?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

swift-whippet In reply to SeekHim [2011-01-04 02:47:20 +0000 UTC]

An aside, the name 'Chow Chow' isn't Chinese; like you said, the breed's name is 'song shi quan' which in no way gave rise to the name Chow Chow. According to the AKC website: "The name "Chow Chow" has little basis for its origin in China; it is believed that expression evolved from the pidgin-English term for articles brought from any part of the Oriental Empire during the latter part of the 18th century. It meant knick-knacks or bric-a-brac, including curios such as porcelain and ivory figurines, and finally what is described today as "mixed pickles", whether of the edible variety or not. (It is an unfortunate fact of the Chow's history that the breed was often used as food in China, with the coat of the long-haired variety sometimes being used as clothing.) It was far easier for the master of a sailing vessel to write "chow chow" than it was to describe all the various items of his cargo. So, in time, the expression came to include the dog."

I did have to look this up since I've never spoken about dog breeds in Mandarin before; the Peke has a few names including 'ๅŒ—ไบฌ็Šฌ' (bei jing quan; 'Beijing Dog', which makes sense for 'Peking-ese'), 'ๅฎฎๅปท็…ๅญ็‹—' (gong ting shi zi gou; Imperial Court Lion Dog) and 'ไบฌๅทด' (jing ba; not sure exactly how you'd translate that).

And I'm sorry, but I'm not sure what Lo-Sze means (though my money would be on something-lion) because I wasn't able to find that written in Chinese. A lot of Chinese words sound the same, so I'd have to see it written out in order to know what it means. :\

swift-whippet In reply to SeekHim [2011-01-04 09:00:49 +0000 UTC]

Just out of curiosity, flipped the Peke wikipedia article into Chinese and looked up some more stuff - apparently they are also referred to as ็ฆ็‹— (fu gou; 'fortune dogs' or if you will, 'fu dogs') and '็‹ฎๅญ็‹—' (shi tzu gou; lion dog). What we know as the Shih Tzu appears to be known in Chinese as the ่ฅฟๆ–ฝ็Šฌ (xi shi quan; from what I understand, Tibetan Dog). THE MORE YOU KNOW! xD

Also not sure if you know this but ๆฒ™็šฎ 'shar pei' (in Cantonese; 'sha pi' in Mandarin) means 'sand skin', referring to the coarse texture of their coats.

Elvynne [2011-01-03 08:35:46 +0000 UTC]

Haha, I agree with not directly calling them "fu dogs" but most people don't know them as guardian lions! Most I've talked to don't even know them as fu dogs. Oh well lol! Your descriptions are always so educational I didn't even notice that Mulan had two males as the guardians. I'd like to see what you do with them in the future

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

swift-whippet In reply to Elvynne [2011-01-03 15:30:46 +0000 UTC]

Granted it's been a while since I've seen Mulan so my recollection of it may be a bit fuzzy, but as a twelve-year-old seeing it for the first time (and I saw it three times in theatres, it was so popular in my country I seem to remember they brought it back for a second run) I recall that as being one of the things that bugged me xD;
And yes I really felt the need to speak my piece about lion dogs! Sadly all of my research done on all these creatures has merely been extensive googling; I'll need to pay a visit to a library at some point, get me some BOOKS, and do some proper hardcore reading.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Elvynne In reply to swift-whippet [2011-01-04 02:42:34 +0000 UTC]

Oh same here! I did a lot of googling myself and I've been tempted to hit the library myself - maybe even to study them a bit as well. I'm sure you remember from my last poll that I was curious what Elvynne would look like as a guardian lion, and I'm still intrigued at that notion lol. Happy Research!
