Description
It was a dark October night as Felix sat in his study, tuning his flute to the chill wind coming in from the open window. He tested a few harmonious notes, which echoed eerily around the room and back. It was a small room with full bookshelves that reached the ceiling; therefore the resonance should not have been so flawless. But laws of physics and tone did not matter much to Felix. Nor did any other set of laws for that matter. He played a few more powerful notes then paused for effect. As if on command, a stronger wind blew through the beckoning window and into the study. The few candles in the room flickered out, and Felix smiled into his ideal darkness. The slight shine of the moon reached in, but was only able to illuminate the windowsill. Now that he was in his element, he called to mind an ominous tune intended for control. But just as he brought the flute to his lips, his advisor flew in. Or, more accurately- advisors. The door opened and closed again seemingly on its own accord. A bright point of blue light floated over Felix’s shoulder. “Must you always interrupt me when I’m busy?” he asked it coldly.
“Must you always be busy when I feel like chatting?” replied what could have been an adult female voice, had it not been knocked up several octaves. The light formed itself into a humanoid being the size of small doll. It was dressed in black and striking yellow, which made it look like on oversized bee, but far more dangerous. “You’re always busy. You need to chill out on this Lord of Vampires stuff,” said the fairy.
“One does not simply ‘chill’ on lordship,” The vampire corrected her as he leaned back in his chair, knowing they wouldn’t leave for a while now that she had started talking.
Then the fairy shifted more earthy colors and said in a more reporting voice to change the subject, “Sir, we have all supplies ready for the celebration of Undying Dusk.”
“Thank you Althea. And what news of the guests?” asked Felix, only vaguely interested in the answer.
“On their way. I have the other servants working on the various other arrangements.” She finished.
“You always prove useful.” Felix complimented her. Which also proved an insult to the other.
The fairy shifted back to the bee outfit, and seemed ready to sting. “Are you saying I’m useless?” it demanded.
“Jynx, you are or over-reacting over a simple statement. But yes, I actually did mean that.” He said rather bluntly, and smirked when she scoffed and flew to the other end of the room to mope. Females are so easily upset, he thought. At least this half of her was. Jynx and Althea were technically the same fairy. It’s amazing how effective split personality could be with a touch of magic to change the appearance.
“Now why did you come in here in the first place?” he asked the moody fairy.
“Well, I was going to tell you who else was stopping by for the celebration, but now I don’t think I want to.” She turned her head and her dark bristly hair shivered.
Felix rolled his eyes, irritated. He would have asked Althea, but when either was in a mood, the other was unlikely to come back for a while. “Then leave me be. Or will you persist in bothering me further?”
Jynx grinned mischievously, showing her sharp little fangs. She flew over to him, her large beetle wings buzzing. “You know how much I enjoy bugging you Felix,” she said, then tugged at some of his long shadowy hair. He jerked out of reach then swatted her away. She cackled and somersaulted backwards through the air in impish glee. “And honestly. What kind of a name is ‘Felix’ for a vampire? Did your parents have a wicked sense of humor or something?”
Felix sighed exasperatedly. He had been through this far too many times. But he had had the opportunity to kill all others with the audacity to ask. But she was actually handy, as much as he’d hat to admit it. “For one thing, vampires aren’t born, so it’s not like they knew I was going to end up Overlord of the Night. For another thing, it means ‘Happy and Prosperous’, not ‘Bright-ray-of-golden-sunshine’ as you make it seem.”
“Aw, but you’re my ray of sunshine,” she said, her voice overflowing with sarcasm. This earned her his charactersitic glare-of-doom, which was well known through most of the land. But before it ever took effect (as if it ever would for her), Althea shifted back.
“I think we may have to redefine the name for you, sir.” She said.
“Like what? ‘Eternally pissed-off and prosperous’?” Jynx cut back in, hovering off to one side.
“I was thinking more like ‘Sadistically Content and Prosperous’.” Mused Althea, floating to the other side with a swoosh of her pastel butterfly wings.
Felix grinned chuckled. It was not a particularly cheerful sound. It could send chills scattering down the spine of even the boldest warriors.
“You nearly proved my point there,” commented Althea. She fluttered over to sit on the desk in from of him, her legs folded.
“Find me a rebel and I could easily prove it fully.” He smirked, showing his long razor fangs.
“I’d really rather you didn’t.” frowned Althea. This earned her a mock scoff from the vampire. Althea and Jynx were like his floating physical conscience sometimes. If they didn’t share the same body, they could easily substitute as his shoulder-devil/angel. Albeit- female ones with irritatingly high voices.
“OOOH! You totally should!” shouted Jynx, proving the point. Her sharp eyes lit up with cruel anticipation.
“No! No, no, no, no!” Cried Althea, fighting her other self. It was quite a sight to see: flashing colors and mix-matched clothes as the singular fairy rolled across the tabletop.
Felix watched, amused for a few moments. But then he suddenly remembered that Jynx had said someone unexpected was coming. Since he probably needed this information, he plucked the fairy from the mess it was creating in his papers and waited for her flailing limbs to calm down. She looked at him, one eye dark and hateful, the other soft and ashamed. Her clothes were oddly stitched together in blacks, greens, yellows, and browns. One wing was bright and curved, the other dark and dainty. She panted a bit, then Jynx took over fully.
“What were you saying about someone else coming?” he asked.
“Someone important has invited his or herself to your little holiday fest,” replied Jynx vaguely on purpose, “And you can let go of me now,” she finished, irritated.
Felix rolled his eyes in frustration, but was saved form any further point evading from Jynx as Althea took over once again. “Sir, Lady Angelique is coming.”
Felix dropped the fairy in surprise, but quickly regained his composure. Angelique was the reason for the holiday in the first place. She was the vampire responsible for the curse of immortality, since she had been an educated mage before she entered vampirism. She should have been the vampire lord, but she had turned it down for a more wandering and monastic life of learning and progressing. Which made her the more religiously recognized leader. But she was only accepting to those competent enough for her respect. Angelique was so enigmatic, it made her seem as if she were of another level of being entirely.
Felix stood. “See to it that this castle is flawless when she arrives. Find the largest spare room we have and make it fit for a goddess. Finish up all other preparations, I don’t want this to look like short-notice. Get to it!” And with that he leaped from the room to bark more orders at various other underlings. The fairy followed, once again a simple floating light.
