Description Time for a nice change of pace with an American engine.

This engine you see here is a type of locomotive known as a gypsy, and was employed in logging operations along the pacific northwest, mainly in California. These engines are unique in that they can serve two purposes. Of course the first is being a source of motive power for carrying logs, but the second is that because of how the cylinders are positioned above the frames and between the wheels, the power from the cylinders can be diverted through a train of gears to drive a winch with the ability to pull felled logs up to a point near the track in a process known in forestry circles as yarding. The Bear Harbor Lumber Company ordered one such locomotive from Marchutz and Cantrell of San Francisco in 1892. The Bear Harbor railroad, which was laid to carry logs, only lasted from 1892 to 1906, when both the lumber mill it served and the line's infrastructure was damaged beyond feasible repair by the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. Number 1 was left forlorn at Andersonia, California until 1958 when the engine was salvaged by Grant Anderson Jr and after a 20 year restoration resides at St. Humboldt State Park in California under the care of the Vintage Timber Association. Out of 20 such engines built Number 1 is the last working Gypsy type engine in the world.
