Description
This was a request by several people but was the most recent to ask.During World War II, the Ministry of Transportation adopted the LMS' Stanier 8F 2-8-0 for mass production as a standard design. Stanier's principal assistant, Robin Riddles, was later brought on in 1943 to adapt the design such that production costs could be reduced. The result was the WD Standard 2-8-0. The design was later further adapted with an extra driving axle to create a 2-10-0, the first of such a wheel arrangement to be mass-produced in Britain. 935 2-8-0s were built by the North British Locomotive Company and Vulcan Foundry between 1943 and 1945. 150 2-10-0s Were built by North British in this same period. Both the 2-8-0s and 2-10-0s saw widespread service with the British Army in France after the D-Day landings in 1944. They were nicknamed "woofer donks" because of the sound they made. 200 2-8-0s were sold to the LNER and another 533 were bought by the British Transport Commission, with all of these engines being inherited by BR upon its formation in 1948, while 184 were sold to the Netherlands, 12 went to Hong Kong, and 1 was sold to the United States. 25 2-10-0s were bought by BR early after nationalization, and another 103 were bought by the Dutch, 16 by Greece, 4 by Syria. Two 2-10-0s remained in War Department service in use on the Longmoor Military Railway, named Kitchener and Gordon. The 758 war-surplus engines were used by BR for their intended purpose, heavy freight duties, with the 2-10-0s being withdrawn first between 1961 and 62 and the 2-8-0s lasting longer until the end of steam on the Eastern Region in 1967. One 2-8-0 and four 2-10-0s are preserved today.

It's basically certain it's long since been scrapped.

I’ll still hunt down the facts. I find it rather interesting that the states would buy something like a WD.
