Description The Great Eastern Railway's S46 "Claud Hamilton" 4-4-0 passenger engine, designed by S.E Holden in 1900, spurned on an 0-6-0 freight version of the class. At the time, they were the largest 0-6-0 in the United Kingdom at that time. The design was refined by Holden and his successor, Hill, to become the LNER classes J16, J17, J18, and J19. All of them were designed for goods work, but some J17s, found themselves on passenger workings on such lines like the M&GN in the 1950s before being replaced by Ivatt 2MTs. The J16s were all rebuilt into J17s, meaning the class was gone by 1932. The J17s, 18s, and 19s were all withdrawn by 1962, with J19s being the last Great Eastern Railway locomotives in service, being withdrawn September of 1962.  No J18s or 19s survive, but J17 number 65567 is preserved as part of the National Collection.
