Description The 700 Class was one of Dugald Drummond's earliest designs for the London and Southwestern Railway, being designed in 1897 shortly after his arrival. 30 Were built by Dubs of Glasgow and were used on goods work. These engines utilized many standard components which would be used by other classes, such as the M7 0-4-4T boilers. The only real modifications carried out on them were the addition of superheaters from 1919 to 1929, which meant the fitting of l larger smokeboxes was required. The entire class survived into Southern Railway ownership and again into British Railways stock. The first was withdrawn in September of 1957 and the final seven went, like so many other pre-grouping locomotives, at the end of 1962, with none surviving.
