Description Day 12 of my Sprite Advent Calendar.

The GWR's trademark Pannier tank can trace its origins all the way back to simple saddle tanks designed by Joseph Armstrong in the 1860s. These engines were then improved upon with the development of the Pannier tank, a hybrid combining the water capacity of a regular side tank with the ease of maintainence of a saddle tank. 266 Examples of these engines were built at Wolverhampton works from 1870 to 1881. The traffic they were used in characterized the general purpose nature of the GWR Pannier tank, that being shunting, light goods, and branch line passenger engines. As newer and more powerful tank engines came along to replace these characteristically Victorian machines, the 'Buffaloes' as they were known, were vulnerable to the GWR's scrap-and-build policy throughout the 1920s. The last of these double framed engines was withdrawn in 1946, and none are preserved.
