"You see..." James struggled to find the words he wanted to say to her.

"...When I first came here I was alone. I was angry and I was having trouble coming to grips with some things about me, but then I met you. When everyone else seemed to turn their backs on me, you offered me kindness. I was a bit callous to you at first, but then I came around. You helped me find myself, and I can never repay you enough other than by asking if you would...perhaps...marry me?" There was a long silence between the two engines. Calynn's face was bright red. She was caught completely off guard by James' sudden advance.

"I...um...wow! This is...I don't know how to..." She stammered. She, too was at a loss for words. "I'm sorry, James! Please forgive me, but I..." James hung on her every word in anticipation for her response. "I'm sorry, but I just don't think I'm ready for it!" She replied. "I can scarcely find the words to describe how much I adore you, James. You're such a splendid engine, I've always admired your paintwork. You're just such a handsome engine, but...I don't know. There's some things I just need to figure out before I make such a huge commitment."

"So then...what's your answer?" James asked. "It's a simple question, really; yes or no. That's all you have to say."

"No it's not! It's not that simple! It's perhaps the biggest emotional and commitment someone can possibly make in their entire life! No one just goes around, willy-nilly getting married like it's no big deal!" Calynn squeaked. "My answer is I don't know!" She answered, finally, and she whirred away before James could see her begin to cry. She was lucky, because at that same time, tears began to well up in James' eyes and run down his cheeks. It had been a long time since he had felt such raw emotions. It was the worst Christmas present James had ever received....
