He grumpily shunted the heavy flatbed into the glow of the Smelters' shed.

"Stupid 'Arry." He snorted "He could've just brought this rubbish in himself." As he rolled along the old steam engine creaked and groaned. It almost sounded like laughter. Bert was uncoupled and rolled alongside. "Who's got the last laugh now?" He sneered. "Useless old kettle!"

"Is that all I am to you?" For the first time, Bert saw the face of the old engine. His face was smudged and dirty, and his eyes weary. "I'm far from useless." He wheezed
"Pah, another steamer in denial." Bert snorted. "You're past it! Diesels are the way forward! There's no need for you now!"

"Oh yeah?" The little engine said, defiantly. "And just whaddaya think'll happen once something better than...*ack*...*fhoof* you comes along, huh?"

"As if!" Bert scoffed.

"Lemme tell ya, pal, I used to be just like you!" The little engine said.
