Description The K Class was a part of a handful of new designs by Lawson Billinton during his time as the LBSCR's Chief Mechanical Engineer throughout the First World War. Seventeen were built at Brighton Works from 1913 to 1921, with three more under construction but were abandoned. These engines were used on mixed traffic duties throughout the LBSCR system and remained in the same general area under the Southern Railway and later British Railways, proving most valuable during the World Wars. The class was all withdrawn, like most other pre-grouping Southern engines, in 1962, with all 17 members being withdrawn from November to December of that year. The fledgling Bluebell Railway planned to purchase one, but the funds necessary were used instead to secure ownership of the East Grinstead Branch and therefore none are preserved. However, a 1/6 scale model built by Billinton himself during his retirement from his own drawings does survive and was sold in 2003 for between forty to fifty thousand pounds ($48,971-$60,989).

Curious Fact:

Billinton was developing a Tank Engine version of the K Class

There are very few known details, but it is known it was meant to be a 2-6-2 and it was going to be classified as F Class, later as M Class and finally as K2 but the proposal was abandoned and the Final Batch of Ks was built instead
