Description Hot on the heels of the Holmes Class D, his successor, William Paton Reid realized the need for a larger class, and as such took the basic design and added a radial trailing axle to create his own Class A. 69 Were built from 1909 to 1920 at Cowlairs Works by the North British Railway, with another batch of 10 ordered but built after the Grouping in 1923. The LNER then built another 20 in 1924. The first batch of six had short cabs, and were classified as N14 by the LNER, with the rest being N15s. During the coal strike of 1921, Nos. 859 and 860 had oil burning apparatus fitted. A third conversion was planned but never carried out, and the apparatus was removed from Nos. 859/60 after a few months. The N14s and N15s were distributed all throughout the NBR system, with many being used for shunting, emergencies, station pilots, and banking inclines, with the first three N14s delivered to Eastfield Shed as bankers on the Cowlairs Incline, where they remained their entire lives. The only major rebuilds which they underwent was the fitting of new boilers between 1921 and 1950. The first N14s were withdrawn in 1947, with the last of them going in 1954. The N15s continued into the early 1960s, with the last being withdrawn in 1962. None are preserved.
