After he told the guard what had happened, he went to the stationmaster to phone Sir Topham Hatt and inform him of the situation. "James." Said his driver. "I've got some bad news. One of your axle bearings has gone kaput, and it's egged out the housing. If we keep going, it'll destroy the whole box and you'll come off the rails."

"What?" James exclaimed. "We're on the other side of the island! How am I supposed to make it back for the wedding tomorrow?! And who'll take our passengers?" Then the guard came up.

"Bad news, there's no other engines available to cover for us." He told James' crew. James' driver groaned. James knew what he had to do. "Then I guess we've got no other option. I'll have to take the train home!"

"Then let it be known that I made my objections heard!" The guard said. "I'm not going to sanction this. We could derail and get someone hurt, or worse!"

"You want to get home or what?" Asked James' driver. The guard said nothing more as he returned to the rear coach in the train. When everything was ready and the whistle blew, James set off again, struggling to keep his broken bearing in check.
