The LBSCR's E1 class was beginning to show its age by the time of the formation of the Southern Railway in 1923. Maunsell, the new chief mechanical engineer, rebuilt ten of them into 0-6-2 tanks with new cabs and longer bunkers for use as bankers and station pilots in the West of England. Though rebuilt, the class carried over many of the problems with which they were built, such as their unbalanced nature when at high speed. Bulleid fixed this for engines used on mainline duties while some remained unaltered and were confined to local duties. Like so many other Southern tank engines, the class was superseded by Ivatt's 2MT prairie tanks between 1955 and 1959, and none were preserved.
