Description
W.G Bagnall of Stafford built locomotives of every shape, size, and gauge for use in almost any condition. The Tongaat sugar company in Natal, in what is today South Africa, placed an order for thirteen 4-4-0 tank engines to serve its own railway system carrying sugarcane from the fields to processing facilities. Some of these engines survived into the the 1960s and after their withdrawal they ended up in a variety of locations. Seven were scrapped, but six survived. Four of them are in the UK in various states. Number 2820, originally named Egolomi, carries the name Isibutu and is in running condition on the Statfold Barn Railway in Staffordshire. the other three, 2287 Sinembe, 2627 A Boulle, and 2819 Charles Wytock are all under restoration at Cargo Fleet, Middlesbrough. 2522 Simpola Sinembe is on static display on an estate in Houston, Texas here in the U.S, and the sixth is and/or was plinthed at Tongaat at a swimming pool.Related content
